✨Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay is a castle in department of Maine-et-Loire, France. It was first built on the site of a Gallo-Roman village high on a hill on the banks of the Thouet river in the 11th c. In 1151, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy, laid siege to the castle on his way back from the Second Crusade. Inspired by a 4th-c. book on the military mastery, he used Roman siege towers, sapping, and incendiary bombs to attack the chateau. During the 16th c. French Wars of Religion the town of Montreuil-Bellay was burnt but the fortress survived. During the French Revolution it was seized and converted into a prison for women suspected of being royalists. In the 19th century the chateau was purchased by businessman Adrien Niveleau, who transformed it into rental apartments. The Niveleaus' descendants still own Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay and make premium wine of the same name. Photo by πŸ™πŸ»πŸ˜

The castle became the property of the Hohenzollerns when George William, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe sided with the Austrians in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War.
However, in 1907, Emperor Wilhelm IIreturned Schaumburg Castle to George, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe on the occasion of his silver wedding anniversary. The gift was also meant to be in recognition of Georg's support in the dispute over the succession to the throne of Lippe-Detmold.

🏰 Genovevaburg
πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Germany

Genovevaburg is a castle standing on the southwestern side of Mayen in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle is the symbol of Mayen and has been rebuilt several times since first being destroyed in 1689. Its name comes from a legend, according to which the seats of counts palatine, Siegfried and his wife, Genevieve of Brabant (German: Genoveva), were supposed to be on the same hill in (or above) Mayen. The earliest references linking the legend to this region date to the 17th century. Since when the castle and its bergfried, the so-called Golo Tower (Goloturm), have been linked to the legend is unknown.

Fantastic towers, turrets and slate roofs with lead spires of Chateau de Jumilhac – one of the castles Richard Lionheart was so eager to seize during the first Anglo-French conflict. The castle in the town of Jumilhac-le-Grand in PΓ©rigord Vert, in the north-east of the Dordogne department is now privately owned. It is under permanent restoration and open to visitors. The current castle was built on the site of an old fortified fortress in the XIII - XIV c. It was remodeled during the Renaissance and later restructured. Interestingly, Antoine Chapelle, a wealthy local ironmaster, married Marguerite de Vars, the heiress of half the domain of Jumilhac, in 1579. He financed Henri de Bourbon in his quest for the throne of France. When he became King Henri IV, Antoine received the title of Count of Jumilhac.

De Haar Castle, located near Utrecht in the Netherlands, is a magnificent example of restored medieval architecture juxtaposed with luxurious 19th-century interiors. Originally built in the 14th century, the castle underwent extensive renovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by architect Pierre Cuypers, known for his work on the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Cuypers envisioned De Haar as a grandiose revival of its medieval glory, incorporating Gothic and Renaissance elements into its design.

Surrounded by immaculate gardens and a moat, De Haar Castle is striking from every angle. Its interior is equally impressive, boasting opulent rooms filled with ornate furniture, tapestries, and artworks collected by the Rothschild family, who inhabited the castle during its reconstruction. Visitors can explore the castle's Great Hall, adorned with coats of arms and a massive fireplace, or marvel at the intricate detailing of the bedrooms and dining areas.

Today, De Haar Castle stands as a testament to architectural vision and historical preservation. It offers guided tours that delve into its rich history, from its medieval origins through its modern revitalization. The castle's picturesque setting, combined with its cultural significance, makes it a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike, providing a glimpse into both medieval life and 19th-century aristocratic living in Europe.
