“O Adonai…O Ruler of the house of Israel, You appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush, and on Mount Sinai gave him your law: Come, and with an outstretched arm redeem us!”

Within this short antiphon the relationship of God and God’s people is captured.

We pray also using one if God’s ancient names, meanly translated as “Lord” in English. Used by Jews as a substitution for the holy name of God which cannot be spoken, and so is a reminder of the heritage the Christian community receives from the people of Israel, the first to hear the promise of the future Messiah.

So often today the Holy name of God and that of Jesus is used more as a curse. Let us pray today for more reverence for the great Name of God.

Today begins the season of the “Great O” antiphons. Each evening before the Magnificat we welcome Christ with a messianic title. When you take the first letter of each of the antiphons in order they make up the words ERO CRAS - tomorrow I come. Today we will welcome Christ as Wisdom coming from the mouth of the most high. Christ our Lord is this eternal Wisdom incarnate. He carried out God’s plan to re-establish everything in Himself as head. May He come more fully to each of is and to the whole world this Christmas, to show us how we may take our part in carrying out that plan for our own happiness and for the happiness of all of creation.
