What is Buddhism actually trying to teach us?

As we begin exploring Buddhism, we discover that there is more to meditation than simply sitting quietly.

The New Kadampa Tradition offers a step-by-step path of teachings that can help us develop greater inner peace, compassion and wisdom.

Three of the key teachings are Lamrim, Lojong and Mahamudra.

🌿 Lamrim — The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

Lamrim presents Buddha's teachings as a step-by-step path. Beginning with developing a kind heart and gradually cultivating wisdom, it guides us towards enlightenment.

You don't need to understand the whole path before you begin.

🌿 Lojong — Training the Mind

Lojong teaches us how to transform our everyday difficulties into opportunities for spiritual growth.

Rather than allowing challenging experiences to leave us feeling discouraged, we can learn to develop patience, compassion and wisdom.

🌿 Mahamudra

Mahamudra is a profound teaching concerning emptiness and, within Ta**ra, the union of great bliss and emptiness.

This is a deeper area of Buddhist practice that we don't need to understand all at once.

There is a path. You don't have to understand everything at once.

Perhaps the most important thing is simply to begin.

To be curious.

To listen.

To meditate.

And to discover how these teachings can become part of your own life.

Over the next few weeks, we'll explore these teachings a little more deeply, beginning with Lamrim — the idea of a step-by-step path.

We use a mala to help us concentrate when we’re saying prayers and mantras. The beads on the mala become very blessed.
There is a story of how the beads were placed around an area where there were problems and because of the blessings this helped to solve all the problems.
So I’ve been placing beads from an old mala in many locations throughout Cornwall to help everyone in the area.

What Does “Modern Buddhism” Actually Mean?

One of the things you may hear when you begin exploring the New Kadampa Tradition is the phrase “Modern Buddhism.”

But what does that actually mean?

It doesn't mean creating a new version of Buddha's teachings.

The New Kadampa Tradition describes Modern Buddhism as a way of presenting Buddha's ancient teachings so they are clear, practical and directly applicable to modern daily life.

Because life today can be busy.

We have relationships, work, family, worries, responsibilities, difficult conversations, uncertainty and all the other things that make up ordinary human life.

So the question becomes:

How can Buddha's wisdom actually help us with the life we're living now?

The teachings are presented as something to understand, practise and experience — rather than simply something to believe.

Meditation gives us an opportunity to become familiar with our own mind.

The teachings give us practical guidance for working with that mind.

And gradually, through practice, we can develop greater inner peace, compassion and wisdom.

This is why the New Kadampa Tradition describes its presentation as being suitable for people of different backgrounds, cultures and belief systems.

You don't have to leave your everyday life behind.

Your everyday life becomes the place where you practise.

And perhaps that's what makes this journey so interesting…

Ancient wisdom.

A modern life.

And the possibility of bringing the two together.
