Bishops welcome conversion therapy ban commitment

A statement from the bishops
The Bench of Bishops in the Church in Wales welcomes the Welsh Government’s recent announcement that it is committed to banning conversion therapy in all its forms. We wish to reiterate our support for the LGBTQI+ community and for any action that protects them from this abusive and damaging practice, as we made clear in our statement last year:

The Bench of Bishops in the Church in Wales welcomes the announcement in the Queen’s Speech that the UK Government will ban gay conversion therapy.

We believe that human sexuality is a gift of God to be cherished and honoured. It is an intrinsic part of who we are as human beings and an expression of God’s glorious diversity in creation.

Anything which seeks to suggest that there is something inherently wrong or sinful in those who are non-heterosexual or which seeks to force people to try and change their sexuality is, we believe, wrong. It is both abusive and traumatizing; as those who have experienced such ‘therapy’ can testify.

We join our voices with The Royal College of Psychiatrists and other healthcare professional in asserting that the practice of gay conversion therapy inflicts life-long damage on those who are forced to undergo it and has no place in the modern world.

We urge the Senedd to bring in robust legislation that will ban conversion therapy in all its forms thereby protecting LGBTQI+ people in Wales from this abusive and damaging practice.

Call for Russian Church to be ‘distanced’

The Governing Body has concluded its two-day meeting at the International Convention Centre in Newport.

The framework for the Church in Wales to reach its target of net zero carbon emissions was on the agenda, and delegates also approved an emergency motion calling on the World Council of Churches to take “clear and appropriate action” to distance itself against any of its members, including the Russian Orthodox Church, who had supported the war. It also urged the WCC to call on all Christians to stand with oppressed people and to work for peace.

The Archbishop of Wales Andrew John used his keynote speech to call for the Russian Orthodox Church to condemn the war in Ukraine. He said Russia’s unprovoked attack was “deplorable” and backed calls for the Russian church to condemn the killing of civilians, press for an immediate ceasefire and demand an end to the war.

Archbishop of Wales to be enthroned

Andrew John will be enthroned as the new Archbishop of Wales at the end of the month.

Bishop Andrew, who is also the Bishop of Bangor, will be enthroned as the 14th Archbishop of Wales in a national service at St Deiniol’s Cathedral, Bangor, on Saturday, April 30. It follows his election as Archbishop in December, having served as Bishop of Bangor since 2008.

During the service the Archbishop and fellow Bishops will be greeted by young people from across Wales who will bring their words of encouragement and prayers for the ministry of the Archbishop and the whole of the Church in Wales.

Throughout the service, the cathedral will be filled with the sound of music, hymns and anthems, including a new setting of medieval Welsh poetry and words from the Bible composed by the Welsh composer Paul Mealor.

Representatives from across Welsh churches and the Anglican Communion will be joined at the service by guests from Wales’ political, cultural and civic life.

The service will begin at 2.30pm and, in a first for an Archbishop of Wales’ enthronement, will be live-streamed on social media and the Church in Wales’ website.

Net zero target on the agenda at next week’s Governing Body meeting

A framework for the Church in Wales to reach its target of net zero carbon emissions will be discussed at next week’s meeting of the Governing Body.

From draught-proofing doors and windows to installing charging points for electric cars, the framework offers a set of measures all parts of the Church can take to be more energy efficient and tackle the threat of climate change.

It will be discussed by members of the Governing Body during the two-day meeting on April 27-28 at the International Convention Centre in Newport. Members will be asked to endorse it, subject to key points from group work during the meeting, and to urge all levels of the Church to embrace and adopt it.

The framework has been produced in response to the Governing Body’s declaration last April of a Climate Emergency and aim towards being net zero carbon by 2030.

It acknowledges that decarbonising the Church will be a “considerable challenge” but says doing nothing is “not an option”.

“We hope that by setting out in this document, gradual and manageable steps, the net zero goal will be less daunting and more attainable. What we do know is that we are all called to care for God’s creation, to see the wonder that surrounds us, love our neighbour near and far by living in just and loving relationships with all people. We can help resolve climate injustice in the world by demonstrating our concern for the planet and our sensitivity and care for the most vulnerable in society now and in the future. This means taking immediate and ambitious climate action now.”

You can read the Net Zero Carbon Framework, which will be discussed on the meeting’s second day, April 28, here.

Other items on this meeting’s agenda include:

• A keynote address by the Archbishop of Wales as President of the Governing Body

• A focus on education which will include an address from Jeremy Miles MS, the Minister for Education and Welsh Language, on the new schools’ curriculum, and a presentation from children at St Davids Church in Wales Primary School, Cardiff.

• A presentation from the Diocese of Monmouth on its mission and ministry today.

The full agenda and all reports are available here.

The meeting will also be live-streamed via a link on the Church in Wales website at www.churchinwales.org.uk and YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/churchinwales
