TOPIC : THE MISSIONARY PARTY RETURNS TO THE MAINLAND

SCRIPTURE📖:"When Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in
Pamphylia."-Acts 13:18.

After the exciting experiences on the island of Cyprus, the three missionaries sailed northward 200 miles. They touched the mainland at Perga, in the province of Pamphylia.
Here a major decision was made. Should they continue to evangelize in seacoast towns or try to pe*****te the interior? They chose the latter course.

At this juncture Mark decided to withdraw from the pioneering missionary party and return home (v. 13). Later he joined another party and carried through until the mission was accomplished.
Paul and Barnabas travelled northward 140 miles to the major city of Antioch in Pisidia. The province of Pisidia was a part of the wider territory known as Galatia.
The journey to the interior was hazardous. The roadway from Perga to Antioch wound through the narrow passes of the rugged Ta**us Mountains.

The travel was doubly difficult because the turbulent Cestrus River had to be forded and reforded. Many travelers had been carried to death in these churning waters.
An additional travel risk involved the robbers who infested countless hiding places along the road. They often swooped down on travellers to maim or to plunder in a merciless way. But the two intrepid faithfuls, Paul and Barnabas, had set their pace and their face by God’s grace to the interior region so that new centers of holy evangelism could be established.

May we have a conscience rugged enough to say no to the easy way and yes to the hard way.

TOPIC : SAUL’S ACCENT ON DARKNESS AND LIGHT

SCRIPTURE📖:" The hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season."—Acts 13:11.

Journeying to the western end of Cyprus, the missionary party came to Paphos, the administrative capital. Here was the residence of the Roman Proconsul, whose name was Sergius Paulus. He had gathered about him a group of astrologers, magicians, and soothsayers. One of these, named Bar-Jesus, attempted to pervert the words and the work of the missionaries.

Saul remembered how he himself had been stricken blind, before he had been brought from darkness into the marvelous light. This symbolized to him the essence of the gospel—moving from blinded eyes to seeing eyes; from the hopelessness of darkness to the hope-filled brightness of a pure, clear light.
Moving from blindness to sight was his favorite word picture for the transformation that takes place when one accepts the gospel.

Accordingly, as Saul dealt with Bar-Jesus he declared, “The hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind .. . for a season.” As this darkness settled on one person, the light dawned on another. The record is that the “deputy [Sergius Paulus] believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord”

These events tell us that there is a key to every life. If the right key is found, that life will be unlocked to Christ and to His plan. When we follow the guidance of the Spirit, even if the method appears unusual, we will usually find the key that brings one into the light.

We yearn for more light, and we desire to see others brought from darkness into Thy glorious light.

TOPIC : A STOP ON THE ISLAND OF CYPRUS

SCRIPTURE📖:"So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia: and from thence they sailed to Cyprus."—Acts 13:4.

The first missionary party to go out under the Christian banner consisted of Barnabas, Saul, and Mark. They made their way from Antioch in Syria to the nearest seacoast town, Seleucia, some 20 miles away. There they took a boat bound for the island of Cyprus, about 160 miles distant. Topographically, Cyprus is a chain of mountains jutting up from the floor of the Mediterranean. It derives its name from the word “copprus” (copper), coming from the many mines in these mountains. The length of the island from east to west is 160 miles.

At the widest point it is 50 miles across. In Paul’s day, the two main ports, Salamis in the east and Paphos in the west, were supply stops for ships sailing the Mediterranean.
There are several reasons this island was included in the missionary itinerary: (1) it was the homeland of Barnabas; (2) Jews and Jewish synagogues were numerous; (3) a nucleus of Christians was already there. Under these favorable conditions, it was natural to make the first stop at Salamis.

From the beginning the missionaries preached in the synagogues. The theme of their message was the “‘word of God”’ (13:5). They proclaimed that the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament had been fulfilled in Jesus. Above all, they witnessed to a living Messiah, because they had met Him, and He lived in their hearts.
Our most convincing witness is personal experience as it squares with the Scriptures.

Teach us the art of making our religious experience Bible-centered, and of giving a Bible-centered witness.

TOPIC : THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES MARCHING ORDERS

SCRIPTURE📖:" Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them"— Acts 13:2.

The Holy Spirit gave specific instructions for the future work of Barnabas and Saul. When this guidance came, the leaders of the Antioch church were “ministering to the Lord, and fasting” (v. 2). They were at a high peak spiritually when the voice of the Holy Spirit was heard. Such devotion and fervency are conducive to breakthroughs from the Holy Spirit. He will reveal himself more often and more vividly when we serve Him and seek Him more earnestly.

The names of the men to engage in this divine mission were called by the Holy Spirit. At the same time, they were told what their task was to be—they were to go on a missionary journey to give the gospel greater scope. The world was to be their parish.
We have seen that the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch, but also the first Christians called to do missionary
work were sent from Antioch. Christianity is most truly Christian to the extent that it is most missionary-oriented. The church must send or the church will end. We must give our religion away, or we must give it up.

From this small beginning at Antioch, the missionary enterprise has become a gigantic force in the world. Through it the Bible has been translated into more than a thousand tongues; millions have been released from slavery to vice, to superstition, and to darkness; civilization has found its most forceful instrument for righteousness, for peace, and for progress.

May we remember that little things can become massive forces when Thou art in them, to bless them, to honor them, and to multiply them.
