🙏 REQUIEM MASS – JOE DOYLE

Many parishioners will know that Fr Gerard Doyle's brother, Joe, has sadly died.

A Requiem Mass for Joe will be celebrated on:

Fr Doyle warmly welcomes his parish family to join him for the Mass and to pray for Joe and the Doyle family.

One of the great strengths of a parish is that we're there for one another not only in times of celebration, but also in times of sadness and loss.

And whether or not you can attend, please keep Joe, Fr Doyle and all the Doyle family in your prayers over the coming days.

📖 EVER WONDERED WHAT SUNDAY’S READINGS ACTUALLY MEAN?

Sometimes we hear the readings at Mass and something immediately connects with us.

Other times, if we're honest, we might leave wondering exactly what we've just heard!

Our weekly Bible Study is an opportunity to slow down and spend some time with the readings for the following Sunday.

You don't need to be an expert on Scripture – that's rather the point!

It's simply an opportunity to read together, ask questions and perhaps discover something in Sunday's readings that we might otherwise have missed.

🌍 CAFOD GLOBAL DEBT PETITION – ADD YOUR NAME THIS WEEKEND

Thank you to everyone who has supported CAFOD's work on the global debt crisis over recent months.

Last summer, as part of the Jubilee Year, our voices joined a much bigger movement calling for action.

More than 35,000 people stood in solidarity with low-income countries by signing the Churches' petition in parishes across the country.

That support has helped keep the issue in front of influential leaders – but the work isn't finished.

For some of the world's poorest countries, huge debt repayments can mean money being diverted away from essential services and the people who need them most.

As Catholics, we're called not only to recognise injustice but, where we can, to do something about it.

📝 The petition will be available to sign on your way out of Mass this Saturday and Sunday – 5th & 6th September.

It only takes a moment.

One signature may feel small. Thousands together are much harder to ignore. 🙏

👧👦 CHILDREN’S LITURGY IS BACK THIS SUNDAY!

After our summer break, Children’s Liturgy returns this Sunday, 6th September, during the 10:30am Mass at St Dominic’s. ❤️

Children of primary school age are invited to come to the back of church at the beginning of Mass.

They'll then explore the Liturgy of the Word in a way designed especially for them, before rejoining their families during the Offertory.

🌿 SUNDAY REFLECTION – WHICH SEAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Most of us like to feel important.

We might not admit it quite that bluntly – but it's probably true.

We like being noticed.

We like being thanked.

We like receiving recognition when we've done something well.

And, occasionally, we might feel slightly put out when somebody else receives the credit!

In today's Gospel, Jesus notices people at a meal choosing the places of honour.

His response is essentially: stop worrying about where you rank.

Instead, choose the lowest place.

It's a lesson in humility – but one that feels remarkably relevant today.

We live in a world where we're encouraged to show everyone our achievements, our holidays, our possessions and the best version of our lives.

Jesus offers something completely different.

Don't spend your life trying to convince everyone else how important you are.

Instead, notice the person nobody else notices.

Help without expecting recognition.

Give without expecting something back.

And do something good even when nobody will ever know you did it.

Perhaps that's our challenge this Sunday.

🙏 Do one good thing this week that nobody else needs to know about.

No Facebook post.

No thank you.

No recognition.

Just you and God.

🌿 **SAINT OF THE DAY – ST JOHN THE BAPTIST**
The Passion of St John the Baptist – Saturday 29th August

Would you still say something was wrong if telling the truth was going to cost you?

That's a much harder question than it first appears.

St John the Baptist was prepared to speak the truth even when that truth was deeply unpopular.

He challenged King Herod over his relationship with Herodias, his brother's wife.

It would have been much easier to remain silent.

Instead, John refused to compromise what he believed was right – and ultimately it cost him his freedom and his life.

Thankfully, most of us will never face anything remotely like John's situation.

But we encounter smaller versions of the same choice surprisingly often.

Someone is being spoken about cruelly and we stay quiet.

We see somebody being treated unfairly but don't want to get involved.

We laugh along with something we don't really find funny because everyone else is laughing.

Or perhaps we hide our faith because we're worried about what somebody might think.

Sometimes doing the right thing is uncomfortable.

But John also gives us another lesson.

Speaking the truth as a Christian shouldn't mean enjoying confrontation or believing we're better than everyone else.

Truth must always be accompanied by courage, humility and love.

🙏 St John the Baptist, pray for us – give us the courage to stand up for what is right and the wisdom to know how to do it with love.

❤️ A little challenge for today:

If you hear someone being put down, be the person who doesn't join in.

Sometimes courage is as simple as that.
