Today is the 60th anniversary of the day when the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate lifted the mutual excommunications that had been in place since 1054AD. On 7 December 1965, Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I and Pope Paul VI issued a joint statement expressing their intention to bring their respective Churches towards reconciliation and closer fellowship.
