Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Tomorrow's Gospel reading relates Jesus' encounter with Zacchaeus, the man who climbs up a sycamore tree to see him.

Morning Prayer is at 8, the Eucharist at 8.30, and the Sung Eucharist at 10.

It will be a joy to see you there.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
THE THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

30th OCTOBER 2022

Bible Readings

Luke 19 1-10

Reflection

We are used to thinking of salvation as something we initiate, our invitation to Jesus to enter our lives. In today’s Gospel it is the other way around: Jesus invites himself into Zacchaeus house and into his life. Zacchaeus’ salvation comes as he welcomes Jesus. How can you welcome Jesus into your life? What form do you think his invitation will take?

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church, that Christians may open their hearts to Jesus. For more and more people to receive Jesus into their lives. For the King and his government, that under their protection the Church may flourish. For the healing of the sick. For the repose of the departed.

Prayer

Almighty and everlasting God, who hast kindled the flame of love in the hearts of thy saints: grant to us, we beseech thee, the same faith and power of love that we, rejoicing in their triumphs, may be sustained by their example and fellowship; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In tomorrow's Gospel, we hear Jesus' teaching us the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. This story concerns our personal relationship with God though Jesus.

The prayer sheet is attached, and Morning Prayer is at 8, the Eucharist at 8.30 and the Sung Eucharist at 10.

It will be a joy to see you there.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

23rd OCTOBER 2022

Bible Readings

Luke 18 9-14

Reflection

The righteous Pharisee looks at the unrighteous tax-collector and thinks how well he is towards God in comparison. The point of Jesus’ teaching is that there are two terms in our relationship with God: us and him. The Pharisee thinks that his relationship with God is merely one tiny portion of the relationship of the whole of humanity to him. He is wrong. The righteousness or unrighteousness of others doesn’t come into it. Or, rather, to compare ourselves with others will lead us only to alienation from him.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church, that Christians may be given the grace they need to seek the mercy of God. For the salvation of the world, that new people may come to find the forgiveness they need in Jesus. For the King and his ministers. For the healing of the sick. For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Lord God, deepen our faith, strengthen our hope, enkindle our love; and so that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY FRIDAY

OF THE TWENTY-NINTH WEEK OF THE YEAR

22nd OCTOBER 2022

Bible Readings

Psalm 24 1-6
Luke 12 54-59

Reflection

Interpreting Jesus, understanding him, is not a cheap thing. It requires us to change. We cannot simply fit Jesus in to a pre-existing view of the world, rather, we must see the world in the light of Jesus. That is what the crowds had failed to do, that is why he calls them hypocrites. They had failed to see that Jesus ministry had shifted the foundations on which their world was built.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church, that Christians may be given the grace they need to see the world in the light of Jesus. For the salvation of the world, that all people may come to ground their lives in faith in Christ. For the King and his government, that they may serve Christ the King. For the healing of the sick. For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Almighty, ever-living God, make us ever obey you willingly and promptly. Teach us how to serve you with sincere and upright hearts
in every sphere of life.Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Thursday in the Twenty-Ninth Week of the Year
20th October 2022

Bible Reading

Psalm 33. 1 – 6
Luke 12. 49 – 53

Reflection

Today’s gospel reading does not fill us with much hope. We think of Christ as the Prince of Peace, we pray for peace in the world; and yet, in today’s gospel Jesus tells us that it is division he brings, not peace. What are we to make of this? Well, it is rare that we see the frustrations of Jesus in the gospel. Today Jesus reminds us that to be reborn, through our baptism, and to enter the Kingdom, is not something we do as a group – but as an individual.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church.
For the salvation of the world.
For the healing of the sick and sorrowful.
For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, now and for ever.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Wednesday in the Twenty-Ninth Week of the Year

19th October 2022

Bible Reading

Psalm 98
Luke 12. 39 – 48

Reflection

Today we are reminded that we cannot know the hour that Christ will return, and so we must live our lives in preparation to meet him. We have a choice in this world – to live according to worldly devices, or to live according to the gospel, knowing that in the end it is the latter that will grant us eternal life.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church.
For peace in the world.
For the healing of the sick and sorrowful.
For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord,
to thy faithful people pardon and peace,
that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Feast of Saint Luke
18th October 2022

Bible Reading

Psalm 147. 1 – 7
Luke 10. 1 – 9

Reflection

Today the Church celebrates St Luke, who wrote the gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Through his writings he bring us, the Church, ever closer to the person of Jesus Christ. Through Scripture, Luke gives, what the Collect calls, ‘medicine’ for the soul. By study of his writings may we be brought ever closer to Christ, and like Luke, share his good news with the world.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church.
For the work of our school.
For the healing of the sick and sorrowful.
For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Almighty God,
thou called Luke the physician,
whose praise is in the gospel,
to be an evangelist and physician of the soul;
by the grace of the Spirit and through the wholesome medicine of the gospel, give thy Church the same love and power to heal; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord who liveth and reigneth with thee
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
God for ever and ever.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Friday of the Twenty-Eighth Week of the Year
14th October 2022

Bible Reading

Psalm 33. 1 – 6, 12
Luke 12. 1 – 7

Reflection

Today we encounter Christ teaching his disciples. He has just rebuked the Pharisees, and they seem to have disappeared from the scene. Jesus uses this opportunity to teach the people who follow him, who we assume were present when he rebuked the Pharisees. Jesus warns us to not be like the Pharisees, because the intentions of our hearts and minds, where our true selves are, will be revealed by God. But Christ tells us, there is hope. God loves us, and those who turn to him in true repentance will be forgiven.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church.
For the work of our school.
For the healing of the sick and sorrowful.
For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Almighty God,
thou hast made us for thyself
and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in thee:
pour thy love into our hearts and draw us to thyself,
and so bring us at the last to thy heavenly city
where we shall see thee face to face;
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, now and for ever.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Wednesday of the Twenty-Eighth Week of the Year

12th October 2022

Bible Reading

Psalm 1
Luke 11. 42 – 46

Reflection

Today’s gospel continues on from yesterday’s gospel. But Jesus has gotten harsher. “Woe to you”, he exclaims to the Pharisees as he puts before them their sin and iniquity. The problem that Jesus is facing is one we have never lost – it is to do with petty customs. How many times do we hear the phrase ‘we’ve always done x or y’? Jesus reminds the Pharisees in today’s gospel that being obsessed with these petty details is an obstacle to the Kingdom of God. To be able to share the Kingdom of God, we must be ready to change. We must be ready to encounter things we don’t necessarily like, but sometimes to face the reality of the Kingdom, we have to change something that seems intrinsically us. We have to trust that God is leading us in the way, and he will prosper our good works.

Intercessions

Please pray for the Church.
For the work of the food bank.
For the healing of the sick and sorrowful.
For the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

Prayer

Almighty God,
thou hast made us for thyself
and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in thee: pour thy love into our hearts and draw us to thyself, and so bring us at the last to thy heavenly city where we shall see thee face to face; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, now and for ever.
Amen.
