NEW PUBLICATIONS ON THE HORIZON

It takes a long time to write a book - even when there's nothing else going on in your life. And recently, we have had a number of other things to keep on top of, so Ann's book has been on the back burner for several months.

However, now, this week, she feels that the book is ready to send off to review. If the Review Panel is happy with it, and if the review is relatively quick, the book can be out in time for the summer schools.

*STOP PRESS! Ann is sending the manuscript off *right now* - as I am writing this. What a relief!

There is another reason why this makes me happy. Now that she has sent off her own book, she can start editing my next book (after, of course, she has designed the cover for her own book, and other editorial details). She has not even read my manuscript yet! Of course, in time this book too will have to go off to review, and I hope that there will be a set of photographs specially commissioned for that - but we may not have long to wait now!

"THE BAHÁ'Í FAITH" BY PATRICK VICKERS

In 1992, the first edition of "The Bahá'í Faith" came out. Originally written for children of between 8 and 14 years of age, its potential as a teaching book for adults was seen by the original publisher. In 2012, the second edition came out, this time published by ourselves. We have now sold over 3,000 copies.

On Monday, we had a phone call from a young man who wanted 50 copies of a particular book: "It is called 'The Bahá'í Faith' by Patrick Vickers." Apparently, he had bought one some time ago, at £1.50, but had not actually read it. However, on Sunday, he was intending to present it to somebody, and thought he ought to read it first. He was, he said, very impressed with it - how easy it was to read, how good it was for giving to people, whether adults or children...

We discussed postage arrangements, cost and so on, and then he asked, "Who am I speaking to, please?" I replied, "Patrick Vickers." "The author!", he immediately said. He was very pleased to learn that the book now retails at just £1 per copy. "Even better!", he said. As far as I could understand, he will keep the boxful of books in his flat, and use them as the go-to book to give away to people.

From time to time, I remind you of this book, because I feel myself that it is a useful teaching tool - something which you can give out to anybody taking a casual or initial interest in what the Faith is about. And, despite the efforts of Monday's nice young man, we still have some copies left...

THE BAHÁ'Í FAITH - WHAT IS IT?

As most of you will know, "The Bahá'í Faith - What Is It?" has been our biggest-selling leaflet. Over the last few years it has been on rather stiff, creamy-yellow, paper, with the title printed in red.

Recently, we replaced "The Bahá'í Faith - What Is It?" with a new version, simply entitled "The Bahá'í Faith". The price is still 10p per copy, and we have been selling both versions side-by-side. The new version has a full-colour front page, with photos of a Pacific island study circle and the Lotus Temple.

"The Bahá'í Faith - What Is It?" is now very low in stock, so this may be the last call for anybody who particularly wants the non-photo version to order some copies. I am guessing that there are well under 200 copies remaining.

P.S. The Bookshop is now open as usual.

“SPACE – THE FINAL FRONTIER?”

Given that NASA has one again begun an era of space exploration, you may wish to have a few copies in hand of our leaflet which covers this subject.
Costing just 10p, it includes the following:

- The need to put our own planet in order

OUR BEST-SELLING BOOK

We have now finished the stock-taking here in Southam, and we are able to tell you that our best-selling book (booklet) is "Short Selections from the Bahá'í Writings". We had 3,000 printed in 2018, and have had to print another 3,000 since. We have now sold just over 4,000 copies.

If you have never studied this little booklet, I will explain to you its content and purpose. The quotations have been chosen to give you an overview of the Bahá'í teachings. Simply by lifting quotes directly from the Scripture, it presents the Bahá'í view of religion, the Messengers, the nature of God, the soul, the next world, prayer, and spiritual progress. It then goes onto the status of women, marriage, children, education, health and science. The third section covers consultation, the earth, economics, civilisation, peace and unity. A very few of these quotes are from Shoghi Effendi or from the Universal House of Justice, where these seemed to be the clearest way of presenting a particular point. The vast majority are from Bahá'u'lláh or from Abdu'l-Bahá.

Because the book provides such a broad overview of the Bahá'í teachings, it is used by many people instead of a leaflet. In other words, it functions as a "super-pamphlet". Because of the way that it is arranged, the reader can either start at the beginning, and read straight through, or - more likely - read those pages first which most interest them.

The cost of this publishing gem? Just 50p per copy. When posting them out to people, I try to pack them in such a way as to reduce the postage costs.

As I lost access to most of the photographs when our computer was hacked, I am hoping that somebody can provide a photograph of the book, below...

REMINDERS

I have been counting stock again this evening, and found a few things I had forgotten about, including:

CAR STICKERS

We still have quite a few of those long blue car stickers, ideal for a rear window. Cost: £1.50 plus postage. They say:

QUIZ QUESTIONS

We have about 300 sets left of the very simple quiz questions, complete with multi-choice answers. Cost: £2.50 plus postage. These can be used in the car, after a Feast, when you are bored, or as an alternative set of questions in a Spiritual Pursuit game.

ANNUAL STOCKTAKING

We are entering the season of the annual stock-taking. ** We are not asking for help, thank you. It is easier for us to do it at odd times when we are free. **

We have to count up how many copies of each of our leaflets and books we have. Most of the stock is in boxes. We know how many boxes we have, and how many are in each box, but we still have to count the loose copies on the shelves.

Stock of books published by others take a little longer, even though we have been steadily reducing the number of different titles we keep on the shelves. Once everything has been counted and valued, we then set out to produce the annual accounts. This takes a long time, for a number of reasons.

We still welcome orders during this period!

NEW MANUSCRIPTS UNDER WAY

After a long period (many months) of nothing new coming out of the Warwick Bahá'í Bookshop, I can now confirm that new titles are on their way. Ann has been working on a new book which should be out this year, and now I am also working on a new book which I hope will be well received.

So: the message is - there *is* jam tomorrow, even if not today.
