BOOKSHOP WILL BE CLOSED 4TH SEPTEMBER

This is advanced warning that the Bookshop will be closed for a week, from 4th to 11th September. Books or leaflets ordered before 4th can be posted out without a problem.

We are still dealing with the recent publication of "Making Sense of Christian Beliefs". Within a week, three different people who have each read a copy have each ordered several more copies - in each case, for teaching Christians. The book has not yet been ordered by either Bahá'í Books U.K. or the Bahá'í Distribution Service in the United States, but we have a good quantity available here.

I have mentioned several times that my next book had been waiting for Ann to review it. This has now happened (Hooray!), but a number of things need to be clarified before we can send it to Review.

We still need people to volunteer to become mobile Book Agents in Scotland, Northern England, Eastern England and Southern England.

FEEDBACK ON “MAKING SENSE OF CHRISTIAN BELIEFS”

Yesterday we had our first feedback on Ann’s new book. A Bahá’í wrote to us:

“I would like four copies, please, if that’s not being too greedy! Plus two more copies of ‘Seeing Through the Clouds’. I recently bought a copy of ‘Christ and Bahá’u’lláh’, which I loved. Your new book brings that right up to date to our problematic world, and is such a nice ‘connecting’ book to our old roots and our new faith, whereas George Townshend’s book was written such a long time ago now and things have moved on in the Faith at such a rate. Hopefully people will see the light more quickly when they see what’s going on around them all over the world, and recognise the reason why Bahá’u’lláh abrogated both the Christian and Islamic faiths.

“Having been brought up in the Roman Catholic church, and having only just read the New Testament properly, I realise that the early teachings of Jesus had been stretched to accommodate the power of those who took control at the Nicene conference. Jesus’s teachings were pure and simple and just like Bahá’u’lláh’s! What a lot they will have to answer for! I apologise for rambling on - I just feel so glad that little books like yours can put things in such simple language for us to understand how it all went so wrong.”

This is exactly the sort of person the book is primarily for – somebody whose religious belief was at one time grounded in Christianity. Of course, it should also be useful for people who never were Christians, but who want helpful hints as to how to *teach* Christians!

Warwick Bahá’í Bookshop now has four teaching books at £1.50 each:

“WHAT DO BAHÁ’ÍS BELIEVE?”
This is a reader-friendly explanation of the Bahá’í teachings. It assumes no previous knowledge of the Faith. Each double-page covers one topic, with a coloured photograph, a short quote from the Writings, and an easy-to-understand text.

“THE BAHÁ’Í WAY OF LIFE”
This is a companion book to “What Do Bahá’ís Believe?”, and sets out to explain the details of life as a Bahá’í, dealing with the Fund, the Feast, the Fast, the Administration and so on. It is ideal for the newer Bahá’í and for anybody ready to accept the Faith.

“SEEING THROUGH THE CLOUDS”
This book explains some of the Biblical promises concerning the Return of Christ, and what the “clouds” which were prophesied to surround that event might have meant.

“MAKING SENSE OF CHRISTIAN BELIEFS”
This latest book gives a Bahá’í interpretation of some of the puzzling teachings common to many Christian denominations, along with a brief introduction to the Bahá’í Faith.

“MAKING SENSE OF CHRISTIAN BELIEFS”

WHO IS IT FOR?

I was chatting to an old friend about Ann’s new book, “Making Sense of Christian Beliefs – Why I became a Bahá’í”. He asked me, “Who is it for? Is it for Christians who are thinking of becoming Bahá’ís?”

I told him that the book was for “Christians who are thinking of becoming Bahá’ís”, or for Bahá’ís who were Christians before, but who have never entirely sorted out the things that they used to believe, or for Bahá’ís who want to educate themselves more, in preparation for teaching Christians…

I then told him (truthfully) that I had been considering this exact question, “Who is this book for?”, myself, and I had concluded that, “This book is for everyone who wants to read it”!

So here it is: “Making Sense of Christian Beliefs – Why I Became a Bahá’í”. It is for you, if you want to read it. One copy will cost you £1.50, and postage for one copy will be £2.00. We still have copies left.

MAKING SENSE OF CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

After many months of hard work, Ann’s new book has finally been printed:

“Making Sense of Christian Beliefs – why I became a Bahá’í”

This is a companion book to “Seeing through the Clouds – the Return of Christ”. It explains the Bahá’í view of Christian concepts such as the Incarnation, the Trinity, the Resurrection and the Second Coming. It describes how Bahá’u’lláh is the Return of Christ in the Glory of the Father. It also explains how God has provided guidance to humanity throughout the ages, and will always continue to do so.

The book is A5 in size and has 48 pages. There are no illustrations.
Each copy costs just £1.50, and postage will be £2 for one copy. If anybody would like a copy, or even a number of copies, please just write your order below, or you can send a private message to Patrick Vickers.

NO MORE SECOND-HAND BOOKS, PLEASE

For a number of years, both the Warwick Bahá’í Bookshop and the West Oxfordshire Bahá’í Bookshop have performed a useful service in accepting books from people and selling them on “second-hand” to other believers.

The reasons people want their old books to go to a new home are various. Older believers are sometimes afraid that non-Bahá’í family members will simply throw their books away! Some people have replaced their real books with an electronic version. Others are just trying to “downsize” their library.

However, the Bookshop simply cannot take any more of these at present. Here in Southam, our shelves are gradually being taken over by our own new publications: obviously, we need to have a certain quantity of each book in the house, ready to send out wholesale. Meanwhile Steve, who lives in Woodstock (West Oxfordshire), is having to pay out money every month to maintain a “lock-up” premises which largely contains second-hand books.

If you have a quantity of books which you would like to donate to somebody, the National Spiritual Assembly may well have advice as to how this can be done.

We would like to offer our thanks to all those who have generously donated their old books in the past.

COMING SOON – A NEW BOOK!

Ann has been working for a long time to get her next book published before the summer schools. Last year, we brought out the book “Seeing Through the Clouds”, as a short book explaining how the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh fulfil the words of Jesus. This year’s book looks at some of the common assumptions made by many Christians, and then goes on to tell the reader more about Bahá’u’lláh and samples His writings. We received the second proof from the printers yesterday, so the process of getting the book just right is nearing its end!

SUB-PLOT

I have written before, that for some time I have been expecting Ann to start work on editing my next book. The news on that front is that she has still not even looked at it!

MEANWHILE…

Despite Bahá’í Books U.K. now being temporarily closed, nearly all of the copies of “What Do Bahá’ís Believe?”, “Basic Bahá’í Beliefs” and nearly all of the introductory packs of leaflets which B.B.U.K. had in stock have now been sold! Do not be surprised if some of these go out of stock on their website again. You can, of course, buy any of these direct from us. Right. Back to packing up leaflets for people.
