My good friend Theo Andreou has just published his first book ‘Temple of God, an Unbroken Vision of the Virgin Mary’, for which he commissioned me to make an illustration based on an illuminated manuscript illustrating the risen Christ trampling on Hades and blessing a personified Zion, understood by tradition to symbolise the church, and typologically related to the Virgin Mary.

Finally finished this painting of Constantinople! Hildegard of Bingen was a German abbess and mystic from the 12th century. Though mostly known now for her musical compositions (which are great), she was also a writer of spiritual and medical texts, and was a spiritual advisor to Pope Eugene III. She also had many visions which were richly illustrated in manuscripts.
