The Salvation Army Stocksbridge Christian Church
Visiting a church can be intimidating, but we want to assure you of a warm welcome. Come as you are!

On Sundays, through a mixture of traditional and new songs, we just want to worship Jesus and would love you to come and join us.

As we have no service on Christmas Day, today we will be lighting the centre candle of our Advent Wreath. Called the Christ Candle, it represents Jesus, his pureness, his holiness, his light.
It is in the centre of our wreath because Jesus is the centre of the Christmas story.
‘And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger’.
That night God stepped into the world, light into darkness, and the world was changed forever.
The Salvation Army at Stocksbridge wish you a happy Christmas, but we pray that you will allow Jesus to step into your world and know his hope, peace, joy and love.

Today we light our 4th Advent candle for love. I read the following:
‘Every love story begins with someone taking a step toward someone.
Christmas begins with God taking the first step—an infinite step—toward us.
He does not shout His love from the heavens.
He does not send an angelic letter or a distant blessing.
He comes Himself.
He comes small, soft, reachable.
He comes into a world that has no room for Him, so that He can make room for us in His heart.
This is love that refuses to stay far away.
This is love that crosses every barrier—divine to human, holy to humble, eternal to fragile—just to be near.
The shepherds run. The wise men journey. The world is welcomed. Christmas is God’s invitation: Come and see. Come and belong. Come and be loved. This is not just a story to admire. It is a love to receive.’
Will you make room for God’s love this Christmas?

Today we will be lighting our 3rd Advent candle which represents joy. According to many Christmas films, we should be gathering to light the town Christmas tree, baking cookies and drinking Eggnog! Unfortunately, real life doesn’t match up to the sentimentality of films, and there will be many households where there is little joy this season, or any other time of the year, for many reasons. When the Apostle Paul wrote, ‘Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!’ I guess we would want to say, Bah Humbug Paul. But Paul writing from a dark, cold prison knew that our true joy doesn’t come from the things of this world, but in Jesus. Through his love, grace, compassion and forgiveness. Today we shall be singing the carol, ‘Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room and heaven and nature sing’. Jesus came so we can experience true joy, may we make room in our hearts to receive him.
