A church, politician, two prize winning authors and history, in fact lots of history. A delightful mix served up at the recent Salford Histories Festival which was, by all accounts, a resounding success. So much so, we’re doing it all again next year. Bigger and better in ‘26. And why not? After all it’s the City of Salford’s Centenary year, which also marks 250 years since the first service at St Thomas’s Chapel of Ease.

See the attached poster advertising a free of charge event on Friday 25th April at St Thomas Church, Pendleton. Starting at 7pm, the “Miners’ Hymns” fundraising event is in support of our good friend Paul Kelly and the Irwell Valley Mining Project.

The evening will include:

1. An introduction from Paul Kelly. This will touch on the importance of our local pits, both economically and socially. In addition, following their decline, how it is important to remember a bedrock of our local industry and how it fuelled homes and the industrial revolution. The act of remembrance is to be captured by the funding of a heritage banner in honour of local collieries and miners. A tribute to a proud industry.
2. A personalised presentation by Theresa Emberton focussing on those that died as a result of local mining accidents and who are buried in the graveyard at St Thomas’.
2. A fifty minute film that provides the opportunity to learn about the hardship of pit work. In addition, the film offers an insight on the relationship between technological advancement and increasing mechanisation in the mining industry and how this was intertwined with the role of trade unions in organising and fighting for workers' rights.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available. Any donations will be gratefully received.

What a wonderful occasion.

The miner’s bench was dedicated today by Bishop Frank Sargeant. This followed Paul Kelly’s moving tribute to those that had lost their lives at Pendleton Colliery. Thank you to all those who were able to attend.

Woohoo!

We are delighted to announce that Theresa Emberton is the recipient of the 2024 Frank Mullineux Award. Having been presented with the certificate at the Salford Histories Festival on Saturday 26th October, the award recognises the original and significant contribution towards local history that is contained in the book, "St. Thomas Pendleton, A Parish & Social History".

It is thoroughly well deserved in recognition of the thousands of hours of research and writing that is now encompassed across 550 pages. It is a history that does justice to the church and the remarkable people of the parish in a time period that spans 250 years.

Why not take a look? The book is available on Amazon and is priced at £20.

Today marks the installation of a bench at St. Thomas' Church to remember those that worked and died at Pendleton Colliery.

This significant achievement is a testament to the hard work and diligence of Paul Kelly, pictured on the left of the photograph, in representing the Irwell Valley Mining Project. Thanks to all those that donated to the cost of the bench and that supported Paul in achieving this ambition.

Importantly, the bench will be officially unveiled at a ceremony at the church at 1pm on Saturday 2nd November 2024. Please come along if you are able.

Thanks to all those that have expressed an interest in a tour of the St Thomas Chapel site and St Thomas’ Church.

We will circulate potential dates once we get the thumbs up regarding the repair of the crypt door and its broken hinge! Hopefully this will be dealt with in the coming few weeks. In the meantime, if anyone else is interested, please let us know.

Remember, this is our heritage. We do not own it, but we do love to understand and share it. As such, there is no charge associated with a tour.

Let’s get that crypt door open and see what lies beyond…

A superimposed map from 1890 that indicates the whereabouts of two significant events in the layout of the graveyard at St Thomas'. As discussed at our history event last Saturday, the graveyard was increased in size in 1851, with a reduction in its size occurring in the late 1890s on the widening of Ford Lane.

If anybody would be interested in a tour of the Chapel site on Brindle Heath Road, together with the Church, its graveyard and crypt, please let us know. Once we have ten onboard, we'll be ready to go.
