These lovely cowslips are not seen in the wild so often these days, but we give them space here and they have spread considerably. They are beautiful flowers, and we don’t cut over them for a time, then they disappear till next year.

One of the beauties of this month has been the snowdrops. The picture is just at the beginning of the resurrection garden where the first snowdrops come out. These ones seed themselves and so increase that way. Other varieties round the garden expand into clumps. Every April we dig some up and replant in smaller groups. It’s lovely and means we have lots of snowdrops in this somewhat dreary month.

Survived 6” of snow that froze solid and already we have some snowdrops out, daffodils up and with buds, the Christmas clematis and an early winter flowering honeysuckle almost open. Encouraging signs of spring.

New flowers for November. Mahona Charity, a bit early and Prunus Autumnalis bang on time, tiny pink flowers in the sky will be around till March. Added to camera roll and no idea why I can’t add it to this message as usual. You can actually see the little prunus flowers if you enlarge the picture.

As the leaves drop to the ground, prunus leaves in glory and a last burst of colour from the Li Tim Oi dahlias.

Harvesting the vegetables we did manage to grow this year we have found very large carrots and beetroot. The last beetroot I dug weighed over a kilo and made soup, evening vegetable and best of all a chocolate and beetroot cake following Jamie Oliver’s recipe. Tasted

One of the lovely things about these gardens is the way a surprise catches your attention. Walking round I noticed these lovely white cyclamen by the font. Years ago I planted them for white flowers this time of year. In all the busyness I forget, then I round a corner and they are greeting me.

This year we have had more trouble with the lack of rain since we came here 27 years ago. Most gardeners would say the same. We only water the greenhouse, newly emerging veggies and seedlings. To do this we have 4 large water tanks that once brought orange juice to this country and a 9foot diameter reservoir. These fill with rainwater through the winter from the garage and greenhouse rooves and John created a cunning pump system so that we transfer too much water from tanks to reservoir and too little water from reservoir to tanks. This way we can go 10 weeks without rain and most summers that is sufficient to keep us using only rainwater for the garden. It keeps us very aware of rain, both lack and plenty. For the first time we have had to use tap water to keep the greenhouse going on a regular basis. With great regret!! Pictures are of rainwater tanks and reservoir.

Hard as it has been to garden in the heatwaves the fruit harvest is being amazing. From no morello cherries last year to an abundance this year, and now a stunning crop of nectarines and peaches.
