Another wonderful day in the parish week. At lunchtime we welcomed The Campion School Schola who led the music beautifully and reverently during Mass, and then sang for The Golden Club. Plenty of mixing and chatting afterwards too, sharing the wisdom of generations.

Then this evening Michelle Moran of Sion Community, SENT offered insight and depth on the theme of “Renewing our Personal Faith.”

A beautiful Mass for the Feast of St Edward the Confessor in the 170th Year of this parish. An especially interesting homily from Canon Nicholas Schofield, Archivist of Westminster Diocese, full of insight about our remarkable Saint and King. Tomorrow we welcome the Campion Schola at lunchtime and Michelle Moran in the evening. On Thursday Greg Finn is at St Peter’s during the day and in the parish in the evening, and on Friday around a hundred parishioners travel to Westminster Abbey for sung Vespers at the tomb of St Edward. This week is the Feast of St Edward the Confessor (tomorrow) in the 170th Anniversary Year of the parish (our church was completed in 1856). There’s a week of special events, talks and Masses - all the information is at www.stewards-romford.org/170. Everyone is warmly welcome.

The church has been beautifully decorated by the Petals - our wonderful flower team.

5000 invites have been delivered across the parish.

There’s a magnificent new history of the parish, full of insight and interesting information about the last 170 years.

There are refreshments after every Mass.

Tomorrow we welcome Bishop Alan for the Feast Day Mass along with the Archivist of Westminster Diocese, Rev Canon Nicholas Schofield, who will be preaching on the life of St Edward.

Tonight we have a “walk through the Mass” at 6pm. Ever wondered what the different signs and symbols mean? Or some of the words and phrases? Come and see! All are welcome.

Many prayers and blessings for the new Bishop-elect of Brentwood, Bishop Timothy Menezes.

We look forward to welcoming Bishop Alan to the parish for the Feast of St Edward the Confessor on Tuesday, in the 170th Anniversary Year of the parish, Bishop Alan has been.kind, generous, prayerful and a wonderful encourager of the various parish projects and initiatives. We look forward very much to continuing the journey in the years ahead with Bishop Timothy.

Prayers for the whole Diocese at this significant moment.

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has today, 10 October, appointed Bishop Timothy Menezes as the new Bishop of Brentwood.

Bishop Timothy, until now an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Birmingham, succeeds Bishop Alan Williams, S.M., whose resignation has been accepted by the Holy Father having turned 75 years old on 15 March 2026. [Link in Bio]

Today also included talks at each Mass by the Margaret Payne, Headteacher of St Peter’s, accompanied by pupils who gave a wonderful & uplifting account of our tremendous primary school.

The scouts & cubs led games for children between and after Masses.

The parish bakers provided a pantechnicon of cake.

And Fr Dominic weaved a West Ham Birthday card into a homily about the power of forgiveness …

This week Fr Dominic begins his Sabbatical - a time to refresh, recharge, pray & reflect, returning in October. The idea of Sabbatical is rooted in the Divine wisdom of the Sabbath day of rest - from the very beginning of creation.

This week also includes the Ascension - on Thursday (Mass at 12.15) - and a fortnight away is Pentecost. So our readings are ever more infused with the Holy Spirit. Let the same Spirit fill your lives & hearts - a Spirit of fruits and gifts, a Spirit of peace.

As Pope Leo XIV is Inaugurated in Rome this morning, we reflect on him during our Sunday Masses. Above all we pray for him, and for all that he will navigate as Pope. The delicate and vital challenge of presenting the timeless truths of our faith at a moment when the world is, as he says, on the cusp of a “Second Industrial Revolution”, caused by the development of AI. All of this in the context of fragile pathways to peace for Ukraine and the Holy Land. Pope Leo XIVs first greeting from the Papal Balcony - Christ’s first greeting to the Apostles after the Resurrection - seems ever more prescient: “Peace be with you.”

As the Cubs, Scouts and Beavers meet tonight, a good moment to remember last Sunday’s celebrations. A wonderful Church Parade, with a surprise special award for Michael. The “Silver Acorn” honours 20 years of service that “exceeds outstanding.” Michael has given many, many hours to Scouting (and even met Annette, his wife, through Scouting - “the best thing the Scouts ever did for him”, she says!)

We thank God for all those who devote such time and energy to help our young people to flourish.
