St Mary Magdalene, Richmond Team Ministry

St Mary Magdalene, Richmond Team Ministry We believe God calls the church of St Mary Magdalene in the centre of Richmond, to be a lively, inclusive and open-minded community for people of all ages.

St Mary’s, part of the Richmond Team Ministry, is an open, inclusive and welcoming community of over 250 people. We offer a variety of ways of worshipping God and serving people. A diverse group with all ages represented, we aim to encourage one another and be alive to our role in the wider world. Children and families are involved wherever possible in our worship, but our different patterns of wo

rship, and our strong musical tradition give space to people whatever their situation and wherever they come from. Our Sunday morning Sung Eucharist at 9.30 am has a family room and groups for children up to 12 years. The 9.30 am on the first Sunday of the month has a particular focus on all age worship within the setting of holy communion. Coffee follows our 9.30 service on every Sunday. There are lots of families with small children at our main service. At least once a month we have baptisms. In addition on Sunday there is an 8.00 am said Prayer Book Communion, an 11.30 am Sung Matins (3rd Sundays) with occasional baptisms and, at 6.30 pm, Sung Evensong – both Prayer Book based. During the week, we have a 10am Communion Service on Wednesdays, followed by coffee. There’s Morning Prayer at 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday – a short service centred on Bible readings and prayers for the coming day. On Tuesday we say Morning Prayer at St John the Divine and on Friday at St Matthias Church. We aim to support one another through a variety of social events and parties as well as groups – the Christians at Work group; the Theology group; the Bible Reading group; the Poetry group; our annual Christianity Explored series and open meetings each autumn where distinguished speakers reflect on issues of faith today, e.g. Faith in the Forces; Faith in Business; Faith in the Media. Parish weekends and retreats are also part of our congregational and team life.

Non-conformism and radical politics......

This memorial to Gilbert Wakefield, on the north wall of St Mary Magdalene, tells some of his turbulent history. From a clergy family and ordained deacon, his views increasingly turned to non-conformism and radical politics. He became a teacher and then writer and was imprisoned for two years in Dorchester gaol in 1799 for seditious libel for his pamphlet A Reply to some Parts of the Bishop of Landaff's Address. He was released at the end of May 1801 but died in September of typhus fever. This memorial was erected by his brother, who was vicar of Richmond.
