A busy time for all the Friends, Sunday saw Ged, Stephanie and Anne waving off the Darlington Society Manager and Staff on their remembrance walk to Saltburn. This walk and the stall they hve in the Redcr branch selling books and jigsaws all in aid of the repair of Jemima Puddle Duck figure which was targeted by anti social behavior. At the same time Fiona, Dot, Loise and Carole met in the cemetery to plan the planting of the many plants that Jackie community Champion from Tesco gifted to us. This meeting saved time on our gardening morning and gave us a chance to see where they would best be placed.
Tuesday saw the gardening Group planting in different parts of the cemetery. We had help from elders from the Mormon Church. they were from New Zealand and Australia helping too.
Mick a maintenance volunteer applied two coats of varnish to the seats in the sundial buttlefly garden for cremation. A lovely job thank you.
At the same time our new tree trail team Barbara, Soo, Carole and Dawn all volunteer friends from different parts of the group who all have experience of working with children. They are devising activities for the first group of children coming through. We appreciate their input and expertise.
Tuesday seemed a very good day until one of our volunteers stepped in some dog dirt right at the back of the old section. What a disgrace, I felt ashamed after 21 years we have not got the message across not to let dogs roam around the cemetery. No one can help us. I am reluctant even to mention this here as this week I know our 'no dog' sign will be blacked out or damaged. If we talk to people who are bringing dogs in, what a choice mouthful we get. It is not as if there isn't places were dogs can run free.
So all is not well after all our efforts to make this place special.

A very wet day however the small gardening group continues on with the plan to replant the wildflower area in the old section. Well done to Fiona and the group of hardy gardeners. The trolley that we use to being our gardening tools to different areas collapsed (we do load it up at times) was repaired by John and Mick, thank you for keeping us moving lads.

Tuesday was a good day in the end although very early it started wet. Wendy and John sorted out where our toy box will be situated in the Peter Pan children's area. This is to hold the toys and bears that blow off the graves. When we find them and are not sure where they have come from they will be placed in there. Thanks to Dave from the Men's Shed for their help.
Lots of tidying up and sweeping up as the lovely cherry trees are finished now.
I have to remind some visitors that we are volunteers at the cemetery however because we have been here for so long 21 years and are here so often we do not make the rules. We do our very best to care for this special place. We would do it event better if there was more of us.
Thanks to Jackie and Tesco for the plants given, they will keep us busy in the weeks to come.
This week is a special week as we are re-planting the wildflower area in the old section. We would like to invite anyone who would like to come to help us please meet in the old section Tuesday May 19th 10-12, all tools provided, please bring gloves. It will be an enjoyable session working together.
The Darlington Building Society staff are working in their High Street premises with the book and jigsaw sale. Last year the staff got together and carried out a remembrance walk for us and they are repeating this on Sunday 24th May starting off in the High Street at 10am walking to Saltburn. Please donate if you can. They are wanting to put the money raised to repair the Jemima Puddle Duck damage it will probably end up being known as the Darlington Duck. Thanks so much to them for their efforts to support us. The Community Pay Back scheme are placing the beautiful hand made poppies they have made at the CWG this week to mark this special week. Dot will be doing a walk round the cemetery, date to be arranged. This is an epitaph from the old section

Tuesday is one of our green days like every Tuesday from 10-12
A lovely day, all busy and involved with our own jobs making a difference. It is good to have Mick back with his organisational skills.
There are many areas to cover and not enough of us to get round every where in one week. Fiona has it planned out and what the priorities are. After all we are volunteers.
Stephanie, Dot and Wendy made an awareness video to make sure that everyone is aware of how vulnerable structures are in the cemetery and how loved they are.
Dot and Ged gave a talk to the Mothers' Union Group of St Peter's Church. Also in the story is how our heroine had helped the church all those years ago. A really receptive audience and a lovely service to start the afternoon. Thank you.
Here is a list of our forthcoming fundraising events which will keep us busy throughout the month. If you can help with anything at all please let us know. One of our friends who is sorting out our website is giving it a new look at the moment, it is under review. thank you there is not many people who would do this free of charge. We know some realy good people who are willing to help.

Tuesday was a good day although you needed to keep going as a little chilly wind was blowing off the coast. We did not have too many volunteers as Fiona was working and a few helpers were on holiday.
A few of the craft group came to look around the cemetery. We found out what they spend their time doing and now it was their turn to find out about our activities. They seemed to enjoy their time with us and were amazed the cemetery was so big.
Here is John with the new hose pipe getting it into action. Kath planting sisyrinchium in the cottage garden gifted from Joyce Thanks to you both. Ian is in the Peter Pan Garden the pottering about and weeding is paying off now. Really good you can clean the Peter Pan pavement it is making a difference.
Our beautiful cherry trees are shedding their blossoms and we are being treated to white and pink paths.
Daffodils are finishing now and it is sad to see them go, thanks to Dawn for this lovely poem. We are trying to dead head many of them so the goodness goes back to the bulb for next year. We have had some tulip and crocus bulbs given to us for next year thanks to Simon and Sue sorry to have missed you.
We have survived another monthly meeting and we have a plan to streamline these meetings in the future.

Thanks to all the fundraisers for their help on the market stall on Friday. We hope you found a bargain, all the items are given to us by local residents who are grateful to us for help with the upkeep of the cemetery. Thanks also once again to Billy for welcoming us.

The Tuesday work continues here is Angie with more work and dedication in the Remembrance Circle weeding and edging around those small pots. Ian is sorting the bins for the week if they are too full rubbish blows about and another litter pick needs to be carried out. More of our volunteers have been through the safety training thanks to Trevor.
This week we are expecting another new volunteer why don't you come and you can start together.
The cemetery is beautiful with many flowering cherry trees although we have lost trees in the past few years there is still so much to enjoy. Cherries are thought to mimic the nature of life, beauty and mortality. They only last two weeks so come soon to see them or leave it a while then the paths are paved with white or pink. petals fall at the peak of beauty without change to the tree symbolizes rebirth and optimism.

This Tuesday we are hopefully preparing and planting the wildflower area in the old section. It is an open invite to anyone who wants to be involved in replanting this memorial meadow Meet us in the old section at 10am please bring gloves equipment is provided.

This afternoon Sunday the 19th from 3-5pm Jackie from the Gypsy Rover has invited us to hold a tombola thanks to her and her staff for their help.
Thanks to the Darlington Building Society for their jigsaw and book sale
This piece shows the cemetery is for everyone we are just looking after it for a time and hoping others will continue the good work of past years.
