The Catholic Diocese of Plymouth, serving the counties of Cornwall (with the Isles of Scilly), Devon and Dorset, is both a member of the Universal Church family and a thriving Charitable Trust committed to the Christian values of faith, hope, love and charity. People of all ages, backgrounds and origins fill the churches, schools, convents and chapels that have been built over the years, praying t
ogether at Mass, celebrating important moments in their lives, finding support in times of struggle and contributing to their local communities and families by striving to live out their faith. Countless people have been baptised, married and had their funerals celebrated as part of the church here, and still, year by year, more join in the life of this Diocese. They do this because it gives meaning and guidance in their lives, providing spiritual nourishment through life's ups and downs and helping them be a positive and loving presence in society. The priests who serve in the Diocese minister to hospitals, prisons, schools and the military as well as to the pastoral and spiritual needs of their parishes. If you would like to visit one of our churches or the Cathedral, attend Mass or simply find a quiet place to reflect and pray, you will be warmly welcomed. The Diocese was established on 29th September 1850. Bishop Joseph Hendren acted temporarily as Administrator until the appointment on June 16th 1851 of George Errington as the First Bishop of Plymouth. Canon Paul Cummins is currently serving as Diocesan Administrator while the Diocese awaits the appointment of a new Bishop.
