Alhamdulillah, what an incredible weekend for 5 Pillars BJJ!

A huge congratulations to everyone who stepped onto the mats and represented the academy at the All Star BJJ Tournament on Sunday. It takes real courage, discipline, and commitment to put your training to the test in competition.

The hard work paid off, with the team bringing home an amazing result:

🥇 1 Gold Medal
🥈 3 Silver Medals

While the medals are a fantastic achievement, we’re just as proud of the character, sportsmanship, and Futuwwah (noble chivalry) shown by all our competitors throughout the day.

Whether you came home with a medal or valuable experience, you represented 5 Pillars BJJ with honour and made the academy proud.

May Allah ﷻ bless your efforts, increase you in strength, discipline, and humility, and grant success to all our students both on and off the mats. Ameen.

Well done everyone — back to training! 💪🥋

Create an inescapable dilemma from the Butterfly Guard. When you hit a standing or seated arm drag, your opponent’s immediate, instinctual reaction is to lean heavily back and drive their weight back into you to protect their back. That exact counter-pressure is the perfect engine to fuel your Hook Sweep .

In this detailed BJJ breakdown, we cover how to sit up into the butterfly guard, establish dominant grip configurations, and use the arm drag to completely destroy their posture. If they fight to stay square, they fall right into the sweep. We look at the crucial footwork, hook placement, and angle manipulation needed to lift and dump even much larger opponents into top Mount or Side Control.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*

*Seated Setup:* Hand fighting to secure the wrist and triceps from your butt.

*The Bait:* Executing the arm drag to force their weight forward or backward.

*Hook Mechanics:* Loading their hips onto your shins so they feel completely weightless.

*The Finish:* Driving through the sweep and cementing the top dominant position.

Take the back without ever pulling guard. The Arm Drag is one of the most efficient, low-risk takedowns in all of grappling because it doesn't require you to shoot underneath your opponent’s weight. Instead, it uses their own forward pressure to clear their centerline, giving you a direct path to their hips and back.

In this tutorial, we analyze the micro-details that separate a failed attempt from a clean takedown. We cover grip fighting from the feet, the explosive "step-outside" footwork, and how to instantly transition into an inside trip, rear body lock, or a direct mat return.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*
*The Setups:* Forcing the reaction you need to access their wrist and triceps.
*The "Pull & Pass" Mechanics:* Using your core—not just your arms—to clear their frame.
*Footwork Precision:* The crucial outside-step that cuts the angle and prevents the counter.
*Finishing Options:* Securing the rear body lock, the inside trip, and safety measures if they turn back into you.

Upgrade your Single Leg X with the power of the lapel.*

In this session, we break down the Single Leg X Worm Guard, a modern evolution of the lapel game that provides unparalleled control over your opponent’s lead leg. While a standard SLX can sometimes be cleared by a skilled passer, the addition of the "Worm" entanglement anchors your opponent in place and kills their mobility.

We demonstrate how to transition smoothly from a basic Single Leg X entry, peel the lapel, and feed it into the "Worm" configuration. This hybrid position not only makes you incredibly heavy but also opens up a series of high-percentage sweeps and back takes that are perfect for both smaller grapplers and lapel specialists.

Take control of the match with the most versatile guard in Jiu-Jitsu
The Single Leg X (SLX) is a fundamental position that offers incredible leverage against standing or kneeling opponents. In this tutorial, we break down the core mechanics of the position and show you the most effective basic sweep variations to put your opponent on their back.

We focus on the "Dilemma" principle—showing you how to react based on your opponent's balance and weight distribution. Whether they are trying to back-step, pressure forward, or stand tall, these sweeps will ensure you secure the top position or transition directly into leg attacks.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*
*The Foundation:* Proper heel and hip placement for a rock-solid SLX.
*The Basic Tilt Sweep:* Utilizing the "hip-bump" to collapse their base.
*The Push-Pull Variation:* Handling opponents who try to clear your hooks.
*The Ankle-Pick Finish:* How to safely stand up with the leg to consolidate the sweep.

Add a lethal "Stealth Attack" to your Side Control game.
In this 5Pillars BJJ tutorial, we dive into the mechanics of the *Cantu Choke*. This submission is a game-changer because it uses the opponent's own lapel (or your own) to create a crushing choke while you appear to be simply maintaining top pressure.

Most people expect a far-side armbar or a Kimura from this position, but the Cantu Choke allows you to secure the tap without ever giving up your dominant Side Control base. We break down the hidden grips, the shoulder pressure, and the specific "torque" needed to finish the fight quickly.

What you’ll learn in this video:
Setting the Trap: How to secretly feed the lapel while maintaining heavy pressure.
The Grip Exchange: Mastering the palm-up/palm-down mechanics for maximum leverage.
The "Weight Drop": Using your chest and shoulder to finalize the constriction.
*Baiting the Escape:*How to use your opponent’s attempt to shrimp to tighten the choke.

*Don't just sweep-secure the pin.* One of the biggest mistakes grapplers make from

*De La Riva guard* is hitting a sweep and allowing their opponent to recover guard during the scramble. In this tutorial, we break down two high-percentage sweeps that use specific "leg-trap" and "hip-pinning" mechanics to put you directly into Side Control.

We focus on the essential grips and weight distribution needed to kill your opponent's ability to "shrimp" or "reguard" as they fall. Whether you prefer the classic DLR tilt or a more modern variation, these two options will ensure you finish your sweeps in the most dominant position possible.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*

The "Short-Circuit" Sweep: How to bypass the half-guard and land in side control.

The Tripod Variation: Using the DLR hook and ankle grip to collapse their base.

Weight Management: How to "surf" your opponent's hips as they fall.

Consolidating the Pin: Securing the cross-face and underhook immediately after the sweep.

Take back control of the match by shuting down the X-Guard.

The X-Guard is one of the most dangerous sweeping positions in Jiu-Jitsu, but it has specific weaknesses that you can exploit. In this tutorial, we analyze the mechanics of the "X" and show you how to dismantle the hooks to secure the pass.

*Turn your sweeps into submissions.* In this 5Pillars BJJ tutorial, we go beyond the sweep to explore the lethal submission options available from the X-Guard. When your opponent tries to defend the sweep by squaring up or clearing their base, they often expose their legs to high-level attacks.

We break down the technical entry into the Knee Bar, focusing on hip alignment and leg entanglement. We then demonstrate the "Dilemma"—how to transition seamlessly into a Toe Hold if they attempt to hide their heel or straighten their leg to defend the Knee Bar.

*What you’ll learn in this video:*
*The Loading Phase:* Shifting their weight to expose the primary leg.
*Knee Bar Entry:* Back-stepping and hip positioning for the finish.
*The Dilemma:* Switching to the Toe Hold when the Knee Bar is defended.
*Finishing Details:* Proper grip placement and bridge mechanics to secure the tap safely.

This video covers one of the most lethal transitions in Jiu-Jitsu: moving from the control of X-Guard to securing Back Control. Taking the back from X-Guard is a high-level skill that allows you to bypass the traditional "sweep and pass" game, taking you directly to the most dominant position in the sport.

We break down the technical details of off-balancing your opponent, clearing the hip, and using your hooks to "climb" to the back whether your opponent is standing or putting their weight down.

Stop settling for just the sweep. In this tutorial, we show you how to use the X-Guard as a launchpad directly to the Back. While X-Guard is famous for its powerful sweeps, its ability to expose the opponent's hips makes it one of the best positions for back takes.

We cover the critical "hip-heavy" mechanics and the leg-pummeling required to clear the opponent's base. Whether they are trying to disengage or smash your guard, these transitions will help you stay one step ahead.
