Evensong at 6:15pm tonight is sung by the choristers, youth choir, and adults of the Cathedral Choir. The canticles are sung to the setting in D by Herbert Brewer and the anthem is Edward Elgar’s ‘The spirit of the Lord’. We are pleased that visitors from our link diocese in the Highveld (South Africa) will be joining us for the service during their time in Monmouth Diocese.

We're looking to find the next generation of choristers to join the Cathedral Choir. We have spaces for boys and girls in current school years 3, 4, and 5 (but we are always pleased to hear from other year groups too). Get in touch to find out more about the amazing experiences of being a chorister. We invite anyone who is interested to come and see our choristers' rehearsal.

• Choristers receive a first class musical education completely free - no previous musical experience required!
• We award bursaries each year to support choristers' learning instruments, or attend courses like the RSCM summer residential in Bath Abbey.
• Subsidised social activities such as bowling, Christmas parties, and sleepovers in the Cathedral.
• The choir has broadcast on BBC Radio Wales, performed in concerts with the St Woolos Sinfonia, with further broadcasts and tours planned.

If you know a child who loves to sing - we want to hear from you!

A lovely Choral Evensong this afternoon sung by the Chapel Choir of Royal St George’s College, Toronto under the direction of Daniel Webb, a former Newport chorister.

We wish the choir a safe onward journey and further musical adventures in Hereford and Chester before they sail for Ireland and last leg of their tour.

Holy Week is a busy time for the Cathedral Choir, but it’s not all work. After singing the Chrism Eucharist for the diocesan clergy this morning (Dove Missa brevis) the choristers got to enjoy bowling this afternoon. For those interested the Cantoris choristers comfortably beat the Decani choristers’ score.

We are very sad to have heard the news that Robert Rice died earlier this week. We so enjoyed his visit to Newport just over a month ago working with our Youth Choir and Back Row. Berty has been an inspirational teacher to so many young singers and we are very grateful to have been able to benefit from his wisdom and skill.
RIP Berty

Members of the Youth Choir and Back Row have enjoyed a day of singing lessons from the wonderful Robert Rice. Thank you so much, Berty - and to Cathedral Music Trust whose grant enabled today’s sessions to take place!
Most of today’s singers had not had vocal tuition before and so the opportunity to work with a top professional, gaining insightful guidance and encouragement is an important aspect of nurturing our future musicians here in South Wales.
