Singing in the rain!

On Sunday afternoon, the choristers and back row will be taking part in an ecumenical Vespers service at Tintern Abbey - and so Mr Coxhead marched the choristers outside during rehearsal yesterday to prepare them for singing in the majestic ruins of the Abbey. We hope it’ll be drier on Sunday!

All are welcome to join the service at 3pm (bringing a camping chair or similar is recommended)

The first choral service of term is not usually in the presence of all the bishops in The Church in Wales / Yr Eglwys yng Nghymru. Evensong last night was attended by the Sacred Synod confirming the appointment of The Very Reverend Dr Manon James as Bishop of Bangor. The music included Herbert Howells' Collegium Regale and The spirit of the Lord from The Apostles by Edward Elgar.

We will be singing at Manon’s Consecration in the Cathedral on Saturday with all the music chosen by the Bishop-elect being by living composers Jonathan Dove, Meirion Wynn Jones, Stephanie Martin, and Judith Weir.

With the start of the new academic year approaching, could joining Newport Cathedral Choir be the next exciting step in your musical journey?

Becoming a Chorister offers a high-class musical training for boys and girls aged 7 to 13. Free music theory tuition, bursaries for instrumental lessons, and the opportunity to take part in concerts, broadcasts, and tours. You’ll make friends for life and there are social and fun activities as well as singing.

The Cathedral Youth Choir is perfect for any aspiring singer to develop their musical skills - open to singers of all voice parts aged 13-18. Perfect preparation for university choral scholarships. The Youth Choir plays a full role in the Cathedral Choir, singing for important services as well as in concerts, broadcasts, and tours.

Our adult volunteer singers provide the alto, tenor, and bass parts of the Cathedral Choir. Known as the ‘Back Row’, we always keen to hear from singers who would like to join us.

For more details about any section of the Cathedral Choir, and how to arrange an informal trial, please contact our Director of Music, Tom Coxhead ([email protected])

The end of a busy academic year for the Cathedral Choir. Tonight at Evensong we promoted next year’s Senior Choristers, and our current cohort moved into the Youth Choir. We also said fond farewells to six members of the Youth Choir who are moving on to pastures new for university.

A year which has included the Enthronement of the Archbishop of Wales, a celebratory Evensong for the tenth anniversary of the girls choir, and our first joint Christmas concert with St Woolos Sinfonia, as well as the usual busy periods of Christmas and Easter. This last term has included hosting the Welsh Three Choirs Evensong with our friends from Brecon and Llandaff cathedrals, a visit to Abergavenny, the wedding of Decani Tenor Harry to Taylor, and a special thanksgiving service for Canon John’s 30th anniversary of the priesting involving three of the choirs from his former parishes. A well earned break is definitely due!

Our thanks to all our musicians, the Choristers, Youth Choir, chaperones, parents, and Back Row.

We look forward to welcoming them back in September when preparations for the Consecration service of the new Bishop of Bangor will begin.

Our choristers have still been hard at work rehearsing and preparing for services - not least the Ordinations service on Saturday - but today there were ice lollies at break time! Thank you Mr Dean for the use of your freezer and delivering them across the road!

We're looking to find the next generation of choristers to join the Cathedral Choir. We have spaces for boys and girls in current school years 3, 4, and 5 (but we are always pleased to hear from other year groups too). Get in touch to find out more about the amazing experiences of being a chorister. We invite anyone who is interested to come and see our choristers' rehearsal.

• Choristers receive a first class musical education completely free - no previous musical experience required!
• We award bursaries each year to support choristers' learning instruments, or attend courses like the RSCM summer residential in Bath Abbey.
• Subsidised social activities such as bowling, Christmas parties, and sleepovers in the Cathedral.
• The choir has broadcast on BBC Radio Wales, performed in concerts with the St Woolos Sinfonia, with further broadcasts and tours planned.

If you know a child who loves to sing - we want to hear from you!

A lovely Choral Evensong this afternoon sung by the Chapel Choir of Royal St George’s College, Toronto under the direction of Daniel Webb, a former Newport chorister.

We wish the choir a safe onward journey and further musical adventures in Hereford and Chester before they sail for Ireland and last leg of their tour.
