Tashīl al-Hamzah (تسهيل الهمزة) is a special tajwīd rule in which a hamzah is pronounced in a softened manner, neither as a full hamzah nor as a pure vowel. The word tashīl means “easing” or “making easier.” This rule commonly occurs when two hamzahs come together, making pronunciation difficult. In the recitation of Ḥafṣ ‘an ‘Āṣim, a famous example is found in Surah Fussilat (41:44): أَأَعْجَمِيٌّ. Here, the second hamzah is softened and pronounced between a hamzah and an alif. Tashīl preserves the eloquence, fluency, and beauty of Qur’anic recitation while maintaining the integrity of the revealed text.
