With concern growing across the region about the impact and damage Storm Benjamin may bring tomorrow, we are urging residents to check on friends and neighbours to ensure they stay safe.
Before the storm hits tomorrow we would encourage you to secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could break windows or damage property if winds are strong enough to move it. Also close and secure all doors and windows.
During the storm, stay indoors where possible and do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is in progress.
Once the storm has passed, make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs. Remind them to be aware of any bogus cold callers.
Rogue traders could use the storm as a way of persuading people that they need work done on their property β such as repairing loose roof tiles or removing damaged trees.
The advice of Trading Standards is NOT to buy goods or services from a cold caller on your doorstep, even if they try and frighten you that the work needs doing immediately.
If you do need work carried out around your home or garden, it's always worth checking with your house insurance company first, as in some policies there is emergency assistance support already included.
To avoid becoming a victim of rogue traders, follow these simple steps:
β’ Never agree to have work done by somebody who is just passing or take their word that it needs to be done at all
β’ Never pay for work before it is completed
β’ Do not accept any offer from them to drive you to the bank to withdraw money
β’ If you need work done, obtain recommendations from friends or family, or visit https://trustedtrader.team/Norfolk/ for traders approved by Trading Standards.
No one should feel pressured into making a rash buying decision. If in doubt always think twice and get a second opinion. Residents concerned about doorstep callers operating in their area or worried about elderly or vulnerable neighbours being targeted can contact Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
