Imagine standing at a baptism. The water is ready, the congregation is gathered, and the man about to step in has come expecting one of the most joyful moments of his Christian life. Then the minister turns to him and says:

"Brother Aya, we are here to celebrate your funeral."

Funeral? At a baptism? You can almost hear the room go quiet.

But Bishop Bayo Yusuf wasn't being dramatic — he was being precise. Because that is exactly what baptism is. It is a funeral before it is a celebration. The old man, the old appetites, the old way of doing life — they go under the water, and they don't come back up. What rises is something new. Something hidden in Christ. Something the world doesn't fully see yet, but heaven already recognises.

"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." — Colossians 3:3-4

We came thinking it was a baptism. It was always a funeral first. And until the old you stays buried, the new you cannot truly live.
