Topic: They Forsook All And Followed Him

Luke 5: 11 - “So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.”

When a bride and groom are at the altar, their vows commonly include the saying 'forsaking all others'. This does not mean that nobody else matters, but rather that their spouse comes first and before anyone else on earth. Yes, you should fulfil your duties to people around you; however, your number one consideration should be Christ and His will for you. There are so many things that, though not harmful in and of themselves, take our attention away from God. The Apostle Paul explains this well: "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify." (I Cor 10:23).

Jesus received different reactions when he called people to follow him. There were some who were more preoccupied with the things of this world - wanted to bury their dead, bid people farewell, etc. (Read Luke 9:59-62). Others decided there and then to leave everything and follow Jesus immediately. In fact, during one of Jesus' appearances after His resurrection, Peter didn't even wait for the boat to get to the land. In John 21:7 the bible says "...he (Peter) put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea." And swam to Jesus!

Now, think about this in relation to yourself. What is/ has been your reaction to God's calling? Sometimes, hesitation can be due to the fear of the unknown. However, we need to "...know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28). A good example is father Abraham who stepped out in faith when God called him (Gen. 12:1-4). When God calls you, know that your life will never be the same again once you respond to His call. Just take a look at all the pioneers of the Faith. The difference between their lives before and after Christ is remarkable! Follow Him and He will make you as he promised (Matt 4:19). He has taken that responsibility upon Himself.

Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for Your call upon my life, I give You all the glory! Lord, help me to respond and act promptly, knowing that You are ready to equip me and provide all that I need for the work You've already prepared for me to do. I ask for the grace to say YES to You always without hesitation, and to do Your will, in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Topic: Are You in Trouble? Just Trust Jesus!

Luke 8:24 - 25 - “And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!”

Even when you are walking in the will of the Lord, challenges can still come up. The fact that Jesus’ disciples were directed by Him to sail their boat and they were met with a storm proves this point (Luke 8:22). The challenges should not come as a surprise to you for we are to count it all joy when we encounter various trials (James 1:2). It is the choice you make that counts - Fear, or faith? When the storms of life arise, what do you do? Do you call on Jesus or do you worry and panic? The disciples panicked and cried out to Jesus, and after he had calmed the storm, he questioned their faith.

Jesus did so because He saw the unbelief in their hearts, and also the worry despite knowing that He was with them and would save them. Are you in trouble right now? The Lord says “Fear not, for I am with you...Yes, I will help you” (Isa. 41:10). Today, choose to believe God because “[His] hand is not shortened that it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear.”(Isa. 59:1). As such, when Jesus intervened “there was a calm”. Therefore, call on the name of the Lord in faith: He will save!

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe” (Pro. 18:10). He is aware of every storm in your life now, and even the ones to come. Let the challenges of life strengthen your faith. Don’t let them make you afraid. Let them push you to trust God the more so you shall come forth as gold (Job 23:10). “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2- 4)

Prayer: Father, I thank You for being my very present help in trouble. I repent from any unbelief, fear or doubt. By your Word, my faith is strengthened through all circumstances, for I know You are mighty to save, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Topic: Who Is Clinging To You?

Ruth 1: 14 - Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother in law, but Ruth clung to her.

In our life's journey, we oftentimes come across people who are "sent" to support us in one way or the other and to be of divine assistance to us. Such people are loyal and committed to helping us fulfil our destiny. They are called destiny helpers. This was the case between Ruth and Naomi in the story surrounding our key scripture above. At this point, Naomi was saying goodbye to Ruth and Orpah, her daughters-in-law, after she had lost both her husband and her two sons. Naomi was prepared to go her own way and return back to Bethlehem; but both daughters-in-law were not ready to let her go.

Eventually, one of them, Orpah, later left; but Ruth stayed. She did not only stay, she actually clung to her. Naomi almost missed it by persuading Ruth to return to her people. Although the Bible didn't tell us exactly how old Naomi was, it is safe to assume that she was advanced in age and may not have been able to make the journey from Moab to Bethlehem safely by herself, without the support of young Ruth. Who is clinging to you and what is your attitude towards them? What is your relationship like with them? Due to lack of discernment many have missed out on people that God sent their way by being unwelcoming.

In some instances, some have missed their blessings because the carriers of those blessings did not look like what they were expecting. Abraham entertained angels who appeared as men and the blessing of a son came to him (read Gen. 18: 1-15). God will position people in your life to help you achieve His dream for you. Hebrews 13: 2 (KJV) says, " Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Ask God for discernment on the journey and treat people with love and due regard and you will not miss out on your destiny helpers.

Prayer: Father, thank you for your desire to see me fulfil the destiny you ordained for me, and for the destiny helpers you have positioned on my path. I walk in love and I receive discernment to identify the destiny helpers you have sent my way in Jesus' name. Amen.

Topic: You Are Born To Reign (3)

Romans 5:17 (NLT) - "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who *RECEIVE* God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!"

God expects us to reign in life. It was His idea from the beginning that man will exercise dominion (Gen 1:26). However, He doesn't expect us to do this unequipped. Hence, in the reference scripture, we see that He has made two provisions for us to reign in life: the gift of righteousness and the abundance of grace.

Beloved, in order for us to reign, we must "receive" these provisions. The extent to which we reign is determined by the degree to which we receive from God. Many people want to reign in life, and this is great but they don't pay attention to the place of receiving. It is what we receive from God that empowers us to live the life He desires. So, prioritize receiving.

Many times, our struggles in certain areas of our lives is an indication that we have not received enough grace to reign in those areas. Hence, we must be regular visitors to the throne of grace (Heb 4:16), so we can receive the requisite provisions for us to reign in every area of our lives. The throne of grace is a place for receiving, and there is abundant grace, mercy, strength, wisdom, love, peace, joy and power.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for Your rich provisions for me in Christ Jesus. I receive the abundance of grace, mercy, strength, power and I reign in all circumstance of life in Jesus' name. Amen

Topic: You Are Born To Reign (1)

The reference scripture shows us there are two requirements for any man to reign in life: the gift of righteousness and the abundance of grace. Everyone who receives these two gifts becomes empowered to reign in life. As believers, we have received these gifts from God, hence we have been equipped to reign. It is important for us to recognise this so we can truly reign in all situations.

To begin, righteousness is not earned, it is received! It is not what you do that makes you righteous, it is God that makes a person righteous. 2 Cor 5:21 says, "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." In the same manner that Jesus was made sin, even though He never sinned, so also have we been made righteous even though we sinned. We receive the gift of righteousness from God when we express our belief in the finished work of Jesus (Rom 4:3-8).

So, if you have put your faith in Jesus, you are righteous! It is on the strength of this gift that anyone is truly able to live righteously. Beloved, don't struggle to try to earn your righteousness by your works, else it will be regarded as a filthy rag in the sight of God (Isa 64:6). Rather, meditate on the gift of righteousness which you have received, and it will empower you to live righteously. Remember, you have received this gift and you have grace, so there is no excuse for you not to reign in every area of your life.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for the gift of righteousness and the abundance of grace which I have received. I declare that I reign in all circumstance of life in Jesus' name. Amen

Topic: My God in Every Season Part 2

Genesis 1:3 - 5 - "And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day".

We established yesterday that God is committed to never leave nor forsake us, even during the night seasons of life. And we rounded up by asking: Can you see him? The ability to know, sense and be confident that God is with you during the dark time is what determines how you will handle the season. Through the night season, you believe it when God says, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14). That is faith; your most important companion through the night season.

In between the night and the morning is a journey. It can be long or short. May your night season be made short by God's mercy and grace. Joseph was 17 years old when he dreamt (Gen.37:2); but the dreams he had of his family bowing down to him didn’t come to fruition until over 20 years later. We are told in Genesis 41:46 that Joseph was 30 years old when he began to serve in Pharaoh’s court. It took more years of him managing the seasons of famine and plenty before he became the Prime Minister. So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt (Gen.41:41).

God's presence was the constant factor all through Joseph's night season in the pit, being sold as a commodity into slavery, serving in Potiphar's house, attempted r**e and being lied against by Potiphar's wife; and finally as a prisoner until Pharaoh sent for him in Gen 41:14. God's presence became his treasured possession, joy and strength. He wasn't going to trade it for sexual pleasure with Potiphar's wife (Gen.39:9-10).

Prayer: Father, help me to keep my eyes on you no matter how long or short my night season may be. Please give me the grace to wait for your promise and pass every test you bring my way.

Topic: My God in Every Season Part 1

Genesis 1:3 - 5 - "And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day".

Every aspect of a man's life comprises of two seasons: the morning and the evening. Night is synonymous to darkness or the time you cannot work or be active; it is the time you are not in control, limited or incapacitated. It is also a waiting time. At such time, you are just there holding on and waiting for the day to break. Everyone will pass through the dark season of life; it is only a matter of time. Isaiah 43:1 says 'when you pass through; not if'. To David, the night experience is like passing through the valley of the shadow of death. However, through it, he was able to declare that God's presence was with him (Ps 23:4).

Joseph passed through his night season; despite that, he was not sorrowful nor did he engage in self pity. Instead, he held unto God and Portiphar was able to see the presence of God in his life. The Lord Jesus, our Master, was not exempted. He passed through his own from Gethsemane to the cross; but our ever faithful God did not allow Him to see corruption as promised (Ps 16:10). It does not matter what your dark season is. There is an assurance and a sure word from God that He will never leave nor forsake you.

God promised in Isaiah 43:2 to be with us WHEN (not IF) we pass through water or river. That is, situations like flood wanting to sweep us off our feet. And when we pass through situations like fire, He promised the flame will not kindle against us as He did for the three Hebrew children in Daniel 3:25. You must keep looking unto Jesus and never take your eyes off him like Peter in the midst of the storm (Matt.14:30). The faith to go through the night season comes by trusting God's promise to never leave nor forsake us. He is not a man that he should lie, nor the son of man that he should repent (Num.28:19). Whatever you may be going through now; God is right there with you. Can you see him?

Prayer: Lord, I thank you because you are aware of my situation. I receive grace to wait on you in my night seasons and to trust in your promise to never leave nor forsake me.
