Topic: Follow Jesus and Have The Light of Life. Part 1

John 8: 12 - "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Failures, confusion and stress exists and pervade everywhere because there's the lack of a guiding light. "For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the LORD will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you." (Isaiah 60:2). Without the light of life, man is doomed; and his life is futile, without meaning and devoid of purpose. God is the source of life and true living is only possible with a connection to Him, the true source.

It is with His light only that our lives are lightened. The Psalmist declares: "For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light." (Psa. 36: 9). Our key scripture noted that the one who follows Jesus shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. "Darkness" relates to whatever is of the devil and his kingdom, dimness of glory, obscurity, sorrow, sickness and pain, bo***ge etc. But we have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and are now in the kingdom of God's dear son, Jesus (Col. 1:13). Therefore, we are to walk as children of light by following Jesus as noted in our key scripture.

What then does it mean to follow Jesus? Consider the disciples, it meant physically going with Jesus wherever he went or wherever he wanted them to go. This was mainly the case when Jesus walked on earth physically. "And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matt. 4:19). However, Jesus is no longer here physically, so how do we follow him today? We follow Jesus through the Word and by the Word. Don't forget that Jesus himself is the Word of God made flesh (John 1: 14). So, to follow Him is to follow and obey the Word and to follow the Word is to follow and obey Him.

Another group of individuals who knew who they were and the behaviour consistent with who they were, were the 3 Hebrew boys; Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego. The Bible records in Daniel 3 that King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden image and instructed everyone to bow and worship the image, and "whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.” (Daniel 3:6).

Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego understood that being children of the Most High, it was inconsistent with who they were for them to bow down and worship the King's image. Despite the threat to their lives they refused to bow. They were so resolute in their faith and refused to be intimidated by the King. The Bible records that everyone else bowed, but they did not. They told the king, "If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”" (Daniel 3:17-18).

They made of their mind that they would not compromise their convictions and behave like everyone else, even if it meant them dying. Beloved, let's learn from these examples. Let's hold on to what we believe and not compromise our convictions at the face of pressure. Like God showed up for the Hebrews boy in the fire, God will always show up for us when we defend our faith in Him. When we remain resolute in our faith despite the challenges we face, God is faithful He will reward our faith.

The story of Daniel is instructive. Out of envy, his fellow governors and satraps made a devious plan to see if he would continue to pray to God at the cost of his life (Daniel 6). They said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God” (Daniel 6:5). So, they made King Darius issue a decree that anyone who prays to any god or man other than the King will be thrown into a lions' den (Daniel 6:7). Nevertheless, Daniel would not let such decree stop him from standing in his identity as someone who prays to Jehovah.

Joseph was another example whose identity was tested. Joseph knew who he was as well as the behaviours and attitudes consistent with who he was. So, when he was tempted by Potiphar's wife, he responded, "There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). Joseph knew that fornicating contradicted his identity, so he refused.

Daniel and Joseph as seen above were asked to do what was contrary to who they were, and they bluntly refused because they were determined to maintain the behaviour consistent with who they were, even at the threat of their lives. Friend, resolve to be like these exemplary men. Maintain your stand in the truth of who you are in Christ, even in the face of persecution. Make up your mind that, at all times, you will “Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity" (1 Timothy 4:12 NLT), no matter the circumstances.

One critical lesson to be drawn from the temptations of Jesus is that part of the temptations and challenges you will face as a Christian will be a test of your identity. In two out of three temptations, the devil said to Jesus: “If You are the Son of God….” This was after God had already publicly affirmed Jesus' identity when He was baptised; "And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17). Knowing who you are in Christ is crucial to your success as a Christian.

Moreover, knowing who you are also means knowing the behaviour that is consistent with who you are and being resolute in maintaining that behaviour. Upon professing your identity, the world will test you. The goal is to know if you will behave in a manner consistent with who you say you are. The world does not want you to be different. So, when they test you, they want to see if you will compromise your identity. But, like Jesus commanded in our anchor scripture, do not be like them.

2 Corinthians 6:17 says, “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” Make up your mind that you will identify as a child of God and remain resolute to maintain the lifestyle associated with being a child of God.

Prayer: Father, please give me the grace and strength to behave always in a manner consistent with who You have made me in Christ in Jesus' name. Amen.

John 1:23 - “He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Beloved, although we are in this world, we are not of this world (John 15:19). As Christians, we don’t belong to this world - we are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. Consequently, the world will always question our identity because we are not like them. To satisfy their curiosity, just like Pilate questioned Jesus about His identity (John 18:33-38), the world might ask the question, "Who are you?" or "What do you say about yourself?" The anchor scripture shows the response of John the Baptist when his identity was questioned.

The Jews had sent priests and Levites to inquire about John's identity. Initially, they tried to force a wrong identity on him. They did this by asking, "Are you Elijah?" "Are you the Prophet?" (John 1:21). However, John rejected all the identity they tried to force on him because he didn't have an identity crisis. Ultimately, the messengers gave up and asked him to tell them who he was. It is instructive that John quoted a scripture in response to their question. He quoted Isaiah 40:3; "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God." Clearly, John's view of Himself was based on what God had said.

Beloved, do you know who you are? Have you found it in the scriptures? When the world questions your identity, how will you respond? When they call you who you are not, what will you say about yourself? When they want you to do something that contradicts who God has made you, how do you respond? You are to know and stand in the truth of your identity as revealed in the Word of God. If you haven't discovered this and/or not convinced about it, you will accept whatever the world forces on you. Therefore give yourself to the study of the Word so you can know who God has made you in Christ and what you have in Him so you can live and talk accordingly.

Prayer: Dear Father, as I study scriptures, please open my eyes to see who I am in Christ. Give me the grace and strength to hold on to what You have shown me about myself at all times, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Topic: You Have Victory Over Satan's Devices. Part 2

2 Cor. 2:11 - Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

As instructed by Apostle Peter, you can and should resist Satan steadfastly in the faith (I Peter 5:9). Do you know that being a child of God means effectively that sin no longer has dominion, power, control, influence or rule over you anymore? "For sin will no longer be a master over you, since you are not under Law [as slaves], but under [unmerited] grace [as recipients of God’s favor and mercy]." (Rom. 6:14). You have victory over sin, live in the victory Jesus gave to you!

Imagine if you opened a window and cold breeze flows in steadily through the opening. To stop getting cold all you need to do is close the window. It is time to close the door against every inroad or access of the enemy into your life. You can stop that habitual act of sin which has become a bo***ge. The greatest power God has given you is your will power: the ability to say 'Yes' or 'No' to anything and stand by it.

Beloved, you have been made holy, righteous and totally free from sin; so, stay free. It is now your responsibility to "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bo***ge." (Galatians 5:1). Sin is what causes separation between God and man. Satan knows this and uses it to draw men away from God. Sin is a killer. It's Satan's most lethal weapon. Flee every appearance of sin and refuse to be separated from God. Be like Daniel who "purposed in his heart that he will not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat..." (Daniel 1:8).

Prayer: I confess and declare that sin has no control over me and I will not be entangled with its yoke again. I stand in righteousness and overcome every device and trick of the enemy in Jesus name.

As a Christian, genuinely born of God by His Spirit and the Word; sin and Satan has no authority or control over you anymore. Even Satan knows this! That's why he resorts to using devices against children of God. A device is a plan, method, or trick with a particular aim. Satan specialises in using devices to take advantage of, outsmart, trick or outwit Christians. He knows he cannot succeed if he comes direct and plain to you. So, he disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14).

This is why the bible warns us to, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). His goal is to devour, steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10a). But he has failed woefully over your life in Jesus name. To be sober and vigilant, you must be a prayerful Christian. Don't be lazy in prayer, but watch and pray. Pray without ceasing, and as Jesus admonished; pray always and do not faint, give up, lose heart or become discouraged (Luke 18:1).

Satan's greatest and most effective device of all time is sin. Once a weak, slumbering and non-vigilant Christian yields to the alluring temptation of sin, you have simply empowered and given satan the right to devour in your life. The good news is that you also have the power to stop him in his tracks by resisting him and saying 'No' to his enticing advances. You are to resist him steadfastly in the faith (I Peter 5:9).

Prayer: Thank you Father for the victory you have given me over Satan and sin. I receive grace to stay alert, watch and pray and not allow the devil take advantage of me in Jesus name 🙏

Topic: Speak Your “Christ Accent”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:73‬ ‭- "And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.”"

If you know Jesus, it will show up in the way you talk. The reverse is also true in that you can tell that if a man is not speaking right, he does not yet know the Lord as he ought to. If you spend time with Jesus, you will start sounding like Him. This is because what you truly believe will show in how you speak. Luke 6:45 notes that; “…out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Our anchor scripture reveals an instance where Peter was being confronted about his relationship with Jesus. This was after Jesus had been arrested. People suspected his relationship with Christ because of the way he talked - his accent. Although the suspicion came because of his Galilean accent, we can also say that your “Christ accent” of faith, love, kindness, truth will show up in your words as someone who fellowships with the Lord.

Faith has a voice; it speaks. ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭‭‭says, "And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak". It's only a matter of time before the things you listen to, comes out from your mouth, or you speak like who you listen to. So, if you want to sound like Jesus with boldness of faith, in love, kindness and with grace, spend time with Him. If you want to talk like Him, listen to Him. Jesus will change your language. He will give you a tongue and voice like His.

Prayer: Lord, I receive grace to sit at Your feet and listen to You. Take hold of my lips and speak through it for Your glory in Jesus' name. Amen
