This morning members from across Heatons Churches Partnership gathered together for an Ecumenical Walk of Witness, for Good Friday. We walked, prayed and reflected together as we journeyed between our churches. At each stop along the way, we gathered to hear the Passion from Mark’s Gospel (Mark 15:1–47), listening again to the story of Christ’s suffering, death, and burial.

Walking together, praying together, and hearing the Gospel in different places reminded us that the cross stands at the centre of all our churches and all our lives.

In the homily, we reflected on the quiet faithfulness of those who stayed at the end; Joseph of Arimathea, who bravely asked for Jesus’ body, and Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses, who stayed, watched, and remembered where he was laid.

They could not stop the crucifixion.
They could not fix what had happened.
But they could stay. They could care. They could love.

And sometimes that is what discipleship looks like for us too. We cannot always fix the world or take away suffering, but we can show up, stand with one another, remain faithful, and love even when everything feels dark.

Good Friday reminds us that love is not only shown in great victories, but in quiet faithfulness, in staying, in caring, in loving.

Because those who stayed at the cross and the tomb were also the ones who would be there on Easter morning.

Even when everything looks finished, God is not finished.
Even when hope seems buried, resurrection is already beginning.

🙏

We pray for the Heatons, consisting of St Thomas, Heaton Chapel, St John, Heaton Mersey, St Paul, Heaton Moor, and All Saints, Heaton Norris.

We pray and give thanks for all the new opportunities to work with their communities, pray as they look for new ways of reaching out and of growing together in faith and witness. We pray for discernment as they look for a new Team Rector.
