"In their hearts is a disease, so Allah increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie."
(2:10)
Reflection:
This verse pierces deep into the human soul. It describes not just an external rebellion but an internal corruption—a spiritual disease in the heart. These are not people who simply made mistakes, but those who chose falsehood repeatedly, until lying became a part of their very nature.
The word “marad” (مرض) in Arabic is profound. It doesn’t refer to a visible wound, but a concealed infection—often unnoticeable at first, but slowly growing. This disease refers to doubt, hypocrisy, insincerity, arrogance, and a love for falsehood. Their hearts are not physically ill, but spiritually blind.
When someone persistently lies, deceives, or acts hypocritically while knowing the truth, Allah, in His perfect justice, allows their hearts to become hardened. He increases them in that disease, not as an act of injustice—but because they rejected healing when it came. They shut their ears to truth, and Allah sealed their hearts in return.
This verse is not merely a condemnation—it is a warning and mirror for all of us. Every sin, every act of dishonesty, every ignored truth, is a seed. If not repented for, it grows into a habit, and that habit may one day become the disease of the heart. The verse urges us to constantly check ourselves:
Am I honest with Allah?
Do I speak the truth even when it’s hard?
Is my heart soft and receptive to guidance, or am I ignoring signs?
The good news is: spiritual diseases can be cured. With sincere repentance, humility, and remembrance of Allah, even the hardest hearts can soften. But the window for that healing is not forever.
Let us purify our hearts before they become sealed. Let us speak truth, live with sincerity, and walk in humility.
