One detail confirmed today is fuelling growing anger over how baby Preston Davey's case was handled before his murder โ€” and it is at the centre of the new calls for a public inquiry.

When social workers visited Preston at home in the weeks before his death, they did not feel that he was in danger.

Days later, on 27 July 2023, he was carried into Blackpool Victoria Hospital by Jamie Varley for the final time โ€” unresponsive, in cardiac arrest, with 40 traumatic injuries on his tiny body.

Preston had already been taken to hospital three times before that final visit. He had begun suffering non-accidental cluster injuries โ€” bruising, seizures, respiratory failures โ€” within weeks of arriving in that Blackpool home. He had been seen by a number of professionals.

And still, the assessment was: not in danger.

Blackpool South MP Chris Webb said today: "Why were repeated signs missed? Why did the systems designed to protect him fail so catastrophically?"

A baby who was visited, checked on and assessed multiple times โ€” still died at the hands of the men who were supposed to be his fathers.

That is the failure Britain now demands answers for.

Just days after Jamie Varley was handed a whole life order for the murder of baby Preston Davey, two MPs have called for a full public inquiry into the safeguarding failures that allowed his abuse and death to happen.

Blackpool South MP Chris Webb and Fylde MP Andrew Snowden say a public inquiry is essential to establish how Preston's adoption was approved and ensure nothing like it happens again.
Webb said: "There are fundamental questions that remain unanswered. Why were repeated signs missed? Why did the systems designed to protect him fail so catastrophically?" He added: "We can't allow this tragedy to be treated as an isolated case. There needs to be accountability, transparency and lessons learned."

Snowden said: "The systems that exist to protect children are there for a reason, and in Preston's case, those systems have failed in the most devastating way imaginable."

Preston was taken to hospital three times and seen by multiple professionals in the weeks before his death. Social workers who visited the home did not feel he was in danger. He died days later.
The calls for an inquiry are growing. Britain wants answers. ๐Ÿ’”

Adam Frisby has delivered a powerful and emotional rebuttal to the wave of homophobic abuse he and his partner Jamie Corbett have faced since the sentencing of Preston Davey's killer โ€” directly challenging anyone drawing comparisons between his family and convicted murderer Jamie Varley.

Frisby, co-founder of clothing brands Reasn and Deserve and former founder of In The Style, said the backlash had been a devastating blow to months of campaigning for surrogacy law reform.

"It just feels like such a kick in the teeth that I know now for sure that this law will not change because so many people have just turned the tide on gay parents because of this," he said. "And for us, it's heartbreaking โ€” it's heartbreaking for me that my daughter is going to grow up in a world where families like hers feel less valued because they've got gay parents."

He was unequivocal in his challenge to critics: "You would never have a heterosexual person do something like this and compare every heterosexual family to that same person โ€” it just would not happen."

He added: "If you are genuinely one of those people that looks at same-sex parents and think that they are doing something wrong, or they are in the same comparison as those two people โ€” that is outright homophobia. You are homophobic."

He was careful to add that the case should rightly make Britain question how children are protected โ€” but said that should never become an excuse to target families like his.

In the wake of Jamie Varley's whole life sentence for the murder of baby Preston Davey, an entirely unconnected gay couple from Bolton say they have been subjected to a torrent of homophobic abuse โ€” receiving more than a thousand vile messages in just 24 hours.

Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett, who welcomed their daughter Leven via surrogate in January, say the hatred began almost immediately after Varley's sentencing made headlines across Britain.

In an emotional Instagram video, Adam said: "What happened with baby Preston is so tragic and so disturbing that it's affected everyone, including me and Jamie. I hope those two rot in hell. But the level of abuse we have received for being gay dads is pretty disturbing."

He said he had been unable to open an app without seeing comparisons drawn between his family and Varley โ€” and calls for people to petition against the very campaign he and Jamie have spent months fighting for.

The couple are campaigning to change UK surrogacy law so that intended parents are recognised as their child's legal parents from birth. Their petition passed 100,000 signatures within 48 hours of launching and will now be debated in Parliament.

A monstrous crime committed by two men. And two completely unrelated fathers โ€” and their baby daughter โ€” are paying an entirely undeserved price for it.

A convicted animal abuser who previously gained national attention following an appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show has been sentenced to prison once again after attacking two pet dogs, leaving one dead and another permanently injured.

David Pogmore, 35, of Warsop, has been jailed for two years and two months after being convicted of further animal cruelty offences and breaching an existing ban on keeping animals.

Pogmore was already known to authorities after a shocking 2012 case involving a springer spaniel named Ruby. At the time, a court heard how he forced an umbrella down the terrified dog's throat and pinned her to the floor with a walking stick. Ruby suffered severe injuries, including bruising, a swollen bloodshot eye, head wounds, and bleeding from her throat.

The abuse led to Pogmore receiving a four-month prison sentence and a 15-year ban on owning animals.

His criminal history resurfaced in 2016 when he appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show, reportedly seeking the results of a paternity test. During the episode, host Jeremy Kyle unexpectedly confronted him about his animal cruelty conviction. Pogmore walked off the programme as audience members jeered, and the incident attracted widespread media coverage.

Despite the lengthy ban, Pogmore recently appeared before the courts again over separate incidents involving two pugs, Bernie and Betsy, belonging to a woman known to him.

According to the dogs' owner, Bernie suffered catastrophic injuries after being violently kicked. The attack allegedly caused serious damage to the dog's spine and brain, leaving veterinarians with no option but to euthanise him.

According to the dogs' owner, Bernie suffered catastrophic injuries after being violently kicked. The attack allegedly caused serious damage to the dog's spine and brain, leaving veterinarians with no option but to euthanise him.

The second dog, Betsy, was also subjected to a brutal assault. The owner stated that Pogmore pulled the dog's leg, threw her into a table, and repeatedly kicked her. Betsy suffered severe injuries, including a fractured femur, head trauma, and bleeding in one eye. She later required surgery and the insertion of a metal rod to stabilise her leg.

Although Betsy survived, the owner says the attack has left lasting physical and emotional scars. The dog reportedly suffers from incontinence, anxiety around men, fear of loud noises, and symptoms consistent with trauma.

Following the latest convictions, Pogmore was sentenced to two years and two months in prison. He has also received a further ban preventing him from owning or being around animals.

Animal welfare campaigners have welcomed the sentence, describing it as an important step in protecting vulnerable animals from repeat offenders. The case has once again highlighted concerns about persistent animal cruelty and the devastating impact such abuse can have on pets and their owners.

A former Crufts-winning dog breeder has received a suspended prison sentence after authorities discovered more than 40 neglected dogs living in filthy and unhealthy conditions at her property in South Wales.

Lynda Cooper, 75, of Pontypool, admitted to 11 animal welfare offences linked to the mistreatment of dogs she bred under the kennel name Trosnant. Cooper was once known for breeding gundogs, including Pointers and Bracco Italianos.

The case began in August 2024 when a concerned member of the public reported suspected animal welfare issues and possible illegal breeding activities at Cooperโ€™s premises. Initial attempts by RSPCA officers to inspect the property were unsuccessful after they were refused entry.

A later visit by Torfaen County Borough Council officers, accompanied by a veterinarian and armed with a warrant, revealed shocking conditions. Forty-one dogs were found living in a property contaminated with urine and faeces, with many suffering from severe neglect.

Veterinary examinations showed several dogs were malnourished and suffering from a range of health problems, including untreated sores, swelling, chronic dental disease, and ear infections. The animals were immediately removed and provided with emergency veterinary care.

Despite rescue efforts, five dogs were euthanised due to the severity of their conditions, while two others died months later after being rehomed.

Investigators also discovered that Cooper had continued breeding dogs without a licence for nearly two years after failing to renew her breeding permit, which expired in 2023. Evidence presented to the court showed she had allegedly misled buyers by altering dogsโ€™ dates of birth, changing microchip information, and falsely marketing cross-breed dogs as purebred animals.

During court proceedings, Cooperโ€™s defence stated that she had struggled emotionally and mentally following a bereavement, causing her circumstances to deteriorate significantly.

Sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court, Recorder Greg Bull KC criticised Cooperโ€™s actions, stating that she had spent two years breeding dogs illegally while ignoring established welfare standards.

Hope Rescue, which helped care for the animals, described the case as one of the most distressing they had encountered. Sara Rosser, Head of Operations at the charity, said many of the dogs arrived severely underweight and suffering from long-term health issues. Older animals had lost significant muscle mass and mobility, while younger dogs displayed signs of fear and poor socialisation due to a lack of proper care and life experiences.

On Friday, Cooper was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. She was also ordered to pay ยฃ10,000 towards council costs, a victim surcharge of ยฃ187, and was banned from owning or keeping dogs for 10 years.

The case has sparked renewed concern over illegal breeding operations and highlighted the importance of reporting suspected animal welfare issues to authorities.

Jamie Varley has begun serving a whole-life prison sentence after being transferred to one of the United Kingdom's most secure correctional facilities following his conviction in the murder of adopted baby Preston Davey.

The transfer took place shortly after sentencing at Preston Crown Court, where a judge imposed a whole-life orderโ€”the most severe punishment available under English law. The sentence means Varley will spend the remainder of his life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Varley is now being held at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire, a high-security Category A prison known for housing some of the country's most dangerous and high-profile offenders. The facility has earned a reputation as one of Britain's toughest prisons due to its strict security measures and the nature of its inmate population.

Prison officials have reportedly placed Varley in a segregated unit rather than the general prison population. Such arrangements are commonly used when authorities believe an inmate may face significant safety risks or require additional monitoring.

The case attracted widespread public attention and sparked strong reactions across the country. During sentencing, the court heard evidence relating to the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of baby Preston Davey, leading the judge to conclude that a whole-life order was appropriate.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Varleyโ€™s co-defendant, John McGowan-Fazakerley, have not been publicly confirmed. Prison authorities have declined to provide details regarding his placement within the prison system.

Experts note that offenders convicted of crimes against children are often subject to special management procedures within the prison estate. Decisions regarding accommodation and security classification are made on a case-by-case basis to ensure the safety and effective management of all inmates.

With his transfer now complete, Varley begins a sentence that will see him remain in custody for the rest of his life, marking the final chapter in one of the most disturbing criminal cases to come before the courts in recent years.

Born in a prison. Taken from his mother at five days old. Given his first taste of love by a foster family. Placed for adoption at nine months old with two men who were supposed to give him everything.

Dead at thirteen months. With 40 injuries on his body. Sexually abused. Murdered. By the people he called his fathers.

Today โ€” 29 guilty verdicts were delivered at Preston Crown Court.
Jamie Varley: GUILTY of murder.

John McGowan-Fazakerley: GUILTY of allowing his death.
The detective called them "pure evil." The CPS called it the worst case of their career. The prosecutor said Preston was at their mercy โ€” and paid for it with his life.

And through all of it โ€” his mother sat in that gallery. His grandmother sat beside her. They wept when the abuse was described. They wept when the images were shown. They wept when the lies were exposed. And today โ€” they wept again.
But today, those were different tears.

Today, Britain stood for Preston Davey. And justice โ€” at last โ€” stood with them.

He was thirteen months old. He was beautiful. He was bubbly. He was loved first.

And today โ€” he has his justice.

With 29 guilty verdicts delivered today at Preston Crown Court, all eyes now turn to Thursday โ€” when both Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley will stand before Mr Justice Turner to be sentenced.

Here is what to expect:

Varley โ€” murder conviction: A mandatory life sentence is automatic. The judge must set a minimum term โ€” the number of years he must serve before parole can even be considered. Given the premeditated nature of the killing, the sexual abuse of a child, the sustained cruelty, the abuse of position as an adoptive parent, and the fabrication of a cover story maintained across two years and a full trial โ€” legal commentators expect a significant minimum tariff. The judge will also consider the indecent image charges and the multiple counts of child cruelty in his sentencing remarks.

McGowan-Fazakerley โ€” multiple convictions: He faces a substantial custodial sentence. The allowing-the-death-of-a-child charge carries up to 14 years. His sexual assault conviction and child cruelty convictions will be sentenced alongside it.

Thursday. Preston's mother will be there. His grandmother will be there. The detective who called them "pure evil" will be there.
And justice โ€” having spoken today โ€” will complete its work. ๐Ÿ’”

Following today's guilty verdicts, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows gave the clearest account yet of what happened to Preston Davey on 27 July 2023 โ€” the last day of his life.

"Preston Davey had been sexually abused, probably twice on that particular day," Fallows said. "In really tragic circumstances. And ultimately that has contributed to his death."

He confirmed that in his view the bath drowning story "never happened at all โ€” as Preston wasn't wet." He said there was no evidence of drowning in the autopsy and no evidence Preston had swallowed water.

What Preston experienced in those final hours before Varley carried him into Blackpool Victoria Hospital was โ€” according to the man who investigated his death โ€” the culmination of months of sustained abuse. Sexually assaulted twice on the day he died.

Filmed while dying by the man who was supposed to be his father. And then driven to hospital with a fabricated drowning story while his killer prepared the lie he would maintain for two years.

Today โ€” that killer was found guilty of murder.

For Preston. Who was thirteen months old on the worst and last day of his life.
