In Remembrance of Dr. Simon Ezevuo Ọnwụ

Today, we honour Dr. Simon Ezevuo Ọnwụ, the first medical doctor from Igboland, who became a qualified physician in 1932 after graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

He was born on 28 December 1908 in Affa, Udi Local Government Area of present-day Enugu State, to Chief Amadi Onwubunta and Madam Nwalute Onwubunta.

After his qualification, he served as a medical officer in Nigeria for 27 years, rising through the ranks to become the first African Director of Medical Services in Eastern Nigeria and later Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health before retiring from public service in 1963.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Ọnwụ made a historic contribution to language development as a key member of the committee that established the modern Igbo orthography, including the 36-letter Igbo alphabet.

He also later served as Chairman of the Eastern Nigerian Housing Corporation and became the first African Vice-President of the International Union of Building Societies.

He passed away in London on 4 June 1969 at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

May his legacy continue to be remembered.
Amen 🙏

The Executive chairman of Ishielu Local Government, Ebonyi state, Hon. Ifeoma Peace Agwu has commissioned new boreholes across several communities in Ishielu LGA, aimed at improving access to clean water for residents.

But it leaves one question hanging, Are boreholes still enough for what communities really need today? Or are we just scratching the surface of a much bigger demand for real, lasting local government development?

If you were in charge, would boreholes still be a top priority, or is it time to think bigger?

This week, we spotlight Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a revered hero and one of the most defining figures in Igbo and Nigerian history.

Born on November 4, 1933, in Zungeru, present-day Niger State, he was the son of Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, one of Nigeria’s wealthiest businessmen.

He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1957 as a regular recruit and rose through the ranks to become Military Governor of the Eastern Region.

In 1966, following the massacres of thousands of Igbos in Northern Nigeria and rising national tension, Ojukwu led the Eastern Region’s push for protection and self-determination. On May 30, 1967, he declared the Republic of Biafra, which led to the Nigerian Civil War.

During the war, despite extreme blockade and hardship, the Biafran side recorded notable indigenous achievements. Under his leadership, scientists and engineers developed the Ogbunigwe also know as Ojukwu Bucket, weapons system, built makeshift oil refineries, and created local solutions in medicine, engineering, and production that sustained life and resistance under siege. These efforts remain widely remembered as a symbol of Igbo ingenuity and self-reliance.

The war ended in January 1970, after which Ojukwu went into exile in Ivory Coast for 13 years before returning to Nigeria in 1982 following a presidential pardon.

In 1994, he married Bianca Onoh, lawyer, diplomat, and former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria.

He passed away in London on November 26, 2011, at the age of 78. His remains were later returned to Nigeria and he was laid to rest in his hometown, Nnewi, Anambra State, with full honours befitting a national figure.

Today, he is remembered as a soldier, statesman, and a symbol of leadership and resilience whose era produced one of the most remarkable displays of indigenous innovation in African wartime history.

Long before Afrobeats conquered the world, Dr Sir Warrior was taking Igbo highlife beyond Nigeria's shores.

Born Christogonus Ezebuiro Obinna, he rose to fame with the Oriental Brothers International Band and became one of the most celebrated voices in Igbo music.

With classics such as Chi Awụ Otu, Ndị Ji Ego and Ugo Chinyerem, Sir Warrior turned everyday Igbo experiences into timeless songs. He died on 2 June 1999 at the age of 52, but nearly three decades later, his music continues to inspire generations.

Which of his songs is your favourite?
