Congratulation to our Rabbi Shalom Morris on this well-deserved honour after ten years of service at Bevis Marks Synagogue!
Congratulations to Rabbi Shalom Morris , awarded the Freedom of the City of London after 10 years at Bevis Marks Synagogue – the UK’s oldest synagogue in continuous use. He was nominated by City Corporation elected members Philip Kelvin and Tim Levene.
He said: “For nearly two centuries, people of the Jewish faith have become Freemen of the City of London. Whilst the Freedom originally meant economic opportunity, for Jews it fundamentally meant equality and friendship.
“As rabbi of Bevis Marks, I welcome this enduring symbol of our community’s cherished place within the life of the City of London. Thank you to Alderman Levene and Common Councillor Kelvin for nominating me, and to friends throughout the City and Corporation.”
Elected member Philip Kelvin said: “Rabbi Shalom Morris has been an outstanding leader of Bevis Marks. Under his stewardship, it has not only preserved its remarkable history but continues to thrive as a living centre of faith, education and community."
"Rabbi Morris has worked tirelessly to build understanding across communities and to highlight the enduring contribution of British Jewry to the life of the City. It is a fitting honour to see him awarded the Freedom in recognition of his leadership, scholarship and service.”
