A beautiful icon of St George the Martyr written by a friend of St Andrew’s and loaned to us for this his Feast Day. We also have an icon of Christ written by her on display in our Lady Chapel for Eastertide.
Icons are said to be ‘written’ because they are understood as a kind of visual theology - proclaiming the truth of Christ and the saints rather than simply artistic creations. As aids to prayer, they’re treated as a kind of sacred language or ‘window into heaven’ most especially in the Eastern Orthodox tradition.
Both icons will be on display in church this Sunday.
