St Cuthbert's, Wood Green

St Cuthbert's, Wood Green A group of people enjoying getting to know Jesus better and helping others to do the same.

We meet together on Sundays at 11am (with various groups for young people), and throughout the week both in the church building, in homes and around Wood Green. For more information, look at our most recent posts, be in touch by e-mail, or come along and see our church life for yourself. (Regular members of the church family use our church app which makes organising and communicating easier!).

Jesus calls us to put God’s his life-giving word into practice – to build our lives on it.
Last Sunday we thought about how God's word is 'in charge' because it is the voice of the creator, the saviour, the King who is in charge. To help us put that into practice, here is a bit of the service sheet:
⚠️ If you see one of these warning signs in your life – is there a truth or a Christian God could use to encourage you?
👍 If you see one of the healthy signs in your life or the life of others – is there someone you could encourage, or is there a minute to praise and thank God for it?

"But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do.” (James 1v25)

Jesus holds out a hope worth having. A hope like no other.
We're having a taster session for our next Hope Explored conversations at the church building on Sunday 28th June at 3-4.30pm.
Why not make 90 minutes for conversation exploring the Christian hope? We'll chat, we'll watch a few short videos, and read/hear a few short bits of the Bible to help frame the conversation.
Come along! Bring a friend!

A less exciting note on which to end the working week...

The council have put in a proposal for New River to be used for more and bigger commercial events – including a licence for live and amplified music 7-days-a-week, and events for up to 2000 people.

It’s unclear how often those large events would happen, or the impact on our neighbours. If the New River PA system began playing at 9am on Sunday mornings (as the licence describes), it would clearly impact our Sunday services quite a lot. There would also be an impact on the use of the building by other groups and events at other times across the week, and for the scouts and other neighbours.

I think we should expect to be disturbed and uncomfortable sometimes in order to bless neighbouring people and organisations. That is part of loving our neighbours. However, the application is for year-round week-long use which means it’s unclear what the impact would be.

So... Please pray
🙏 …that the council would reach a decision which is wise, equitable, and loving to all the neighbours as well as to New River.
🙏 …that all our various neighbours voices would be heard and given appropriate weight. _(I think it’s fair to say there hasn’t been much communication/consultation which means some voices could easily be missed)._ The deadline is 1st June.
🙏 …for “all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness”. (1 Timothy 2v2)
🙏 …that if more people come to the area because of this proposal, we would have and take the opportunities that brings to serve people and to point them to Jesus.

Information about the application is here if anyone else would like to respond before the 1st June deadline. (E-mail: [email protected])

Consultation period, submitting comments, current applications and reviews.

Here's an extract from what the Tuesday and Thurday night growth groups will be looking at tis week. Hopefully by sharing it can help more of us to be retaining and putting into practice God's word to us from Sunday morning, so that we are not deceived... (James 1v16-18).

Here’s a reminder of some of what we thought about last Sunday morning. (Not all of us are this visual or artistic with our sermon notes!).

We’ll be back in James 1v5-8 this Sunday.
James' letter is a gift from God to help Christians live whole-heartedly & single-mindedly for Jesus in a world where it’s easy to wander.
On Sunday, we’ll hear its encouragement to ask God for the wisdom we need to live that kind of life.

I was looking for something else in the back catalogue that related to icebergs and came across this. The reconciliation iceberg tries to present what steps might be required for two people to be reconciled where they have a different awareness/grasp of the wrongs that have been committed (which is almost always).

We might talk about it in an opening of a growth group over the next little while, but for those of us who miss out on those times...

(I sent this around the church whatsapp group today...)

I’ve just been reading an article offering advice on how to be welcoming to newcomers. I think there’s lots that’s great about the welcome we offer, but there are still ways it can grow more Jesus-like.

I’ve pasted an extract below to help in that. I don’t think it’s a particular issue for us. I’m not responding to anything I’ve seen. But reminders help. As the quote says – a warm, safe Jesus-like welcome doesn’t happen by accident. 😀👍

“A word to men
If you are a man speaking to a new woman - especially one that is younger than you and has turned up alone: just take a half-step back —literally and metaphorically. Especially be aware of your physical size and how intimidating you might appear.

Be friendly, be warm, but be brief. Don’t be intense or intrusive. Introduce her to others, especially to other females. Be aware of physically cornering her - in our church, you can’t get out of the pews unless the person on the end moves, which means you can trap someone… don’t do that!

Church should be one of the safest places in the world. That doesn’t happen accidentally - it happens because people exercise a little restraint.”

Stop scaring off the very people you’re trying to welcome
