It can sometimes feel as though division and discouragement dominate the headlines. But when I spend time in churches and communities across the country, I see another story too.

I see people caring for neighbours, supporting food banks, coaching children, checking in on those who are lonely, and working together to make their communities kinder and safer.

These acts of hope happen all the time, yet so often they go unseen.

That’s why I’m pleased to support A Million Acts of Hope - a week of action taking place from 13–20 May, bringing together charities, faith groups and communities across the UK to celebrate the hope already present among us.

Hope is something we choose - and something we build together.

Today I visited the Sternberg Centre for Judaism and met pupils, teachers, rabbis, and community leaders.

It was good to see the vibrant life of this community and the extraordinary work being done through education, worship, outreach and interfaith engagement. Jewish communities enrich our national life in so many ways.

But it was impossible to ignore the distressing truth about Jewish life in Britain today. No parent should have to fear for their child’s safety at school or at worship.

Antisemitism must be opposed without hesitation or qualification. We all share responsibility for challenging hatred wherever we encounter it.

Please be assured of my prayers, support and friendship.

Thank you, Your Holiness, for this special message to Christians around the world for Thy Kingdom Come 2026.

Ascension reminds us that Jesus reigns, and that through the Holy Spirit, his life continues in us.

Our world is longing for hope, peace and renewal. As we journey from Ascension to Pentecost, let us pray together for more people to know Jesus Christ - and the fullness of life we find in him.

🕯️DAY 1: Ascension Day

“Ascension reminds us that Jesus reigns, and that through the Holy Spirit, his life continues in us.”

Today marks the beginning of Thy Kingdom Come, the global wave of prayer shared by Christians across churches and nations from Ascension to Pentecost.

In our first film, The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, invites us to begin these 11 days of prayer with simple faith, asking God to move afresh in us and through us: Come Holy Spirit, Thy Kingdom Come.

It was a joy to consecrate the new Bishop of Stepney and Bishop of St Germans at St Paul's Cathedral today.

Both Bishop Rod and Bishop James will bring many gifts to these new roles, in preaching, evangelism and building bridges for the common good. Please join me in praying for them, and for the people and churches of the Dioceses of London and Truro that they are called to serve.

The death of Bishop Richard Harries is a great loss not just to the Church of England but to the country at large. His wisdom, compassion and profound commitment to the common good will be missed in the Church, the House of Lords and beyond.

As I pray for his family and all who mourn, I give thanks to God for a life so well lived in service to Jesus Christ. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

As I leave Rome today, I do so with profound gratitude for all the encounters, and all that I have received, over these days of pilgrimage. From the warm welcome from our Catholic brothers and sisters, to praying and worship with Anglicans and Catholics, to seeing churches supporting those in need.

I’m particularly grateful to Pope Leo XIV for his welcome, his words of hope, and the opportunity to pray together. It’s been a privilege to reaffirm the friendship and bonds of affection between our Churches that have grown over recent decades. May God bless our ongoing pilgrimage as we seek the unity that Christ prayed for.

In our divided world, Christians must have a more hopeful story and keep modelling something different - walking and working together to serve the world that God loves. Whatever may divide us, the love of Jesus Christ is greater. Our world needs the Gospel, and we are called to share it together.

I leave Rome today with gratitude and prayers for all the people I have met and for continuing friendship and partnership - and with a renewed sense of the reality that in Christ we are one.

Yesterday - Day three in Rome - I had the pleasure of commissioning Bishop Anthony Ball as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s representative to the Holy See.

Bishop Anthony was commissioned in a beautiful choral evensong at the Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio Loyola. The service was full of joy and the hope, and brought together Anglicans, Catholics, Orthodox and many others from across God’s Church.

Thank you to His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle preached powerfully during the service about our common faith and unity in Jesus Christ.

Please pray for Bishop Anthony Ball as he takes up this important ministry and for the Anglican Centre in Rome.
