PRISM stands for Preserve, Restore and Improve St Michael's. St Michael's Church Blackheath is fundraising to restore the church, tower and fabric. St Michael and All Angels, Blackheath Park, built in 1828 - 30, is a Grade II* listed church. It is a focus of worship in the Cator Estate, drawing its congregation widely from surrounding areas of Lewisham, Eltham and Greenwich. Its tower and spire, k
nown as the Needle of Kent, needs to be repaired urgently and the stone of the church is disintegrating and at risk of breaking off. The heating is antiquated, using up large amounts of fuel. The flooring is breaking up and presents trip hazards to visitors. PRISM is an appeal for funds to restore the church to its former glory, to make vital repairs as well as making improvements to the church. These improvements will include a better, more efficient heating system and better access for users of wheelchairs and the elderly. We want the church to be more welcoming, providing greater community benefit and enabling regular meetings of local groups and many community events such as organ recitals and concerts to take place in comfort and safety. Please help us in this vital work. We are seeking to raise £720,000 from the members of the congregation, friends, former members, local residents and businesses through fund raising events as well as from grants from charitable organisations. We ask that you give generously to save and improve a cherished building, which is such a landmark site of South East London.
