The Catholic Association of Performing Arts (CaAPA) was formerly known as the Catholic Stage Guild and changed its name to encompass all aspects of the theatrical profession. Motivated by Christian values, the Association performs a dual role, serving the needs of its members and, through them, the wider community. We welcome everyone who is interested in the performing arts and/or interested in u

sing their talents, skills knowledge and experience to help others. For example, to stage our theatrical events we need not just directors, designers, actors and stage managers but also promoters, administrators, caterers, welcomers, etc. Whilst membership is largely concerned with helping others, however, you can be sure to derive much pleasure and practical benefit from being part of CaAPA. Members apply their talents and skills to helping the wider community, for example putting on theatre productions to help people in their spiritual journeys and to raise funds for good causes. Our programme of events includes theatrical productions, church services (in London and Blackpool), retreats, theatre outings and social gatherings. CaAPA members are also affiliated members of the Club for Acts and Actors in Covent Garden, and many of our events take place in the CAA's theatre and in nearby Corpus Christi church, which has been our main place of worship for nearly ninety years. A beautiful devotional poem.
Merry Christmas from CaAPA

The Burning Babe
By Robert Southwell SJ

As I in hoary winter’s night stood shivering in the snow,
Surpris’d I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow;
And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
A pretty Babe all burning bright did in the air appear;
Who, scorched with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed
As though his floods should quench his flames which with his tears were fed.
“Alas!” quoth he, “but newly born, in fiery heats I fry,
Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I!
My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns,
Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns;
The fuel Justice layeth on, and Mercy blows the coals,
The metal in this furnace wrought are men’s defiled souls,
For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good,
So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood.”
With this he vanish’d out of sight and swiftly shrunk away,
And straight I called unto mind that it was Christmas day.

Thursday 4th September, CaAPA is presenting a performance of ‘The Beloved Son’ at the CAA in Covent Garden.

There was some concern that the CAA’s refurbishment would not be complete but all is well so it is very much full steam ahead for this special performance.

This beautifully crafted one man show is based on the fascinating life of Henri Nouwen - a Dutch Catholic priest, professor, writer and theologian. It has received fantastic reviews and CaAPA is delighted to be able to present a performance of this special play.

It is performed by Andrew Harrison whom I know from my work in audio drama and he is delighted to have this opportunity to perform the show. We too are delighted that we can host it at the CAA. We want to give him a warm welcome and so I am writing to encourage all of you who are able to come along and support not only Andrew, but our association. Being able to present drama with such direct Catholic relevance is a privilege and I hope it will be a fabulous evening and an opportunity to gather a good number of people. It’s by no means restricted to members so please spread the word and bring a friend!

You’ll see from the attached flyer that admission is free with donations afterwards.

I hope to see you there,

Very best wishes,

Dominic Hecht (CaAPA Chairman)

Thank you to all who came and see you this autumn!

Dear CaAPA member

I hope this finds you well.

The Association is planning this year's Summer Gathering 0n 18 July for members to get together and re-energise our small community.

As most of you will remember, CaAPA has held several very successful gatherings at Allen Hall in Chelsea in recent years. This year unfortunately, the diocesan seminary is unable to host us there as the building is undergoing extensive refurbishment work during the summer vacation.

However our Associate Chaplain Fr Dominic Robinson has come to our rescue! He has enabled us to have our Summer Gathering at his beautiful church in the heart of London. He is the Parish Priest at the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception, popularly known as Farm Street in Mayfair (114 Mount Street Marylebone London W1K 3AH), and has been able to offer us Friday 18 July beginning with a sung mass at 6pm followed by a reception in the church's Aula Magna, at which will be served light refreshments, prosecco and fruit juices.

We have been able to secure a most competitive price of only £10 per person for this event. Based on past events a wonderfully enjoyable and convivial atmosphere is promised!

I would welcome a response by FRIDAY 11 JULY at the very latest - if not sooner; will you be able to attend? The caterers at the venue need some idea of numbers - they need a confirmation as soon as possible.

Please reply NOW and let me know if you might be able to pop this into your diary!

You can pay directly into the CaAPA account: Catholic Association of Performing Arts:

Please state reference: Summer Gathering

Sort Code: 30-92-45

Account number: 01765313

Your payment guarantees admittance. And, if you wish, please bring a friend or two!

I hope we can make this event a memorable success!

Many thanks and God bless.

This Flores de Mayo - Planting a Flower of Faith in the Philippines!

18/04/2025

This Easter Vigil, the Catholic Church in England is expecting a decade-high surge of new entrants to the faith. There is anecdotal evidence of a particular increase in young men, who say their interest was sparked initially by Catholic apologists on social media and also by the traditional heritage of Catholicism. https://bit.ly/4jEDtVT
