The Catholic Association of Performing Arts (CaAPA) was formerly known as the Catholic Stage Guild and changed its name to encompass all aspects of the theatrical profession. Motivated by Christian values, the Association performs a dual role, serving the needs of its members and, through them, the wider community. We welcome everyone who is interested in the performing arts and/or interested in u

sing their talents, skills knowledge and experience to help others. For example, to stage our theatrical events we need not just directors, designers, actors and stage managers but also promoters, administrators, caterers, welcomers, etc. Whilst membership is largely concerned with helping others, however, you can be sure to derive much pleasure and practical benefit from being part of CaAPA. Members apply their talents and skills to helping the wider community, for example putting on theatre productions to help people in their spiritual journeys and to raise funds for good causes. Our programme of events includes theatrical productions, church services (in London and Blackpool), retreats, theatre outings and social gatherings. CaAPA members are also affiliated members of the Club for Acts and Actors in Covent Garden, and many of our events take place in the CAA's theatre and in nearby Corpus Christi church, which has been our main place of worship for nearly ninety years. Dear member,

This is just a short reminder that CaAPA will be holding its Summer Gathering on Friday 10 July at Farm Street Church in Mayfair, starting with mass at 7pm followed by a reception.
Thank you to those who have responded so far - with either a yah or nay! - but can I ask the remainder of our lovely membership again to please let me know if you are able to attend (or not).

We have been able to secure a most competitive price of only £15 per person for this event. Based on past events, a wonderfully enjoyable and convivial atmosphere is promised!

I would welcome a response by MONDAY 6 JULY at the very latest - if not much sooner; will you be able to attend? The caterers at the venue require some estimate of numbers - and they need a confirmation as soon as possible.

CaAPA Concert

CaAPA has arranged a special free concert for long-standing Catholic Stage Guild and CaAPA member Charlotte Williams on Wednesday 20 May at the CAA (Club for Acts & Actors), Bedford Street, Covent Garden at 7.30.
It's called If Music Be the Food of Love.

Charlotte has been a stalwart member of the Association for many, many years and has sung at services for both the CSG and CaAPA at Corpus Christi, Maiden Lane, often accompanied on the organ by the late Richard Codd, who so generously remembered CaAPA in his will.

Charlotte was a great friend of our Vice-Chair Michael Slater, who introduced her to the Association, and of the late Secretary of CaAPA Molly Steele, whose memorial mass we celebrated last November.
The concert will feature songs and music that have a special meaning for Charlotte.
We welcome all CaAPA members - and CAA members - and their friends to make this a special evening for Charlotte!

(CaAPA is deeply grateful to the CAA for the opportunity of honouring Charlotte Williams in such a beautiful location.)

Archbishop of Westminster Richard Moth offered “support and prayers” to Pope Leo XIV as he arrived in Algeria on the first stage of his ten-day visit to Africa when he will also visit Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.

Archbishop of Southwark John Wilson also urged prayers for the Pope, saying, “Our Holy Father has been courageously advocating for peace, stating clearly that the message of the Gospel cannot be ‘abused’ and that he ‘will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace’.”

“We pray for Pope Leo XIV as he starts his apostolic journey in Africa,” said Archbishop Moth. “We continue to support his unstinting calls for peace and reconciliation across all areas of conflict.”

The Archbishop called for indifference to be fought against in the face of war and suffering:

“In my Easter message I said, ‘Humanity is marked, scarred, by warfare and injustice – often instigated by greed and misguided power – bringing harm and death to so many and often the most vulnerable’. We must never become indifferent to war, violence and suffering.

“We pray for peace, justice and reconciliation across the world and we pray for the Holy Father.”

He issued his message after Pope Leo, on the flight to Algiers, responded to the comments by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social network.

Increasingly, it appeared that many even in Trump’s own Maga base were critical of his attacks on Pope Leo. After a backlash, Trump also removed an AI image of himself he had posted, which appeared to make him look like Jesus-type healing figure.

New CAAPA member Edmund Matyjeszek is launching a new exhibition on the life of Mary, featuring paintings reproduced from the National Gallery, at Farm Street Church, London, opening on Friday 1st May.

The exhibition is entitled “Pilgrim of Hope: A Life of Mary, Mother of Jesus in Pictures.”

Edmund has also recently published “A Book of Feasts: The Marian Year”, a new collection exploring 21 feasts dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus.

He will be in residence at Farm Street Church every Tuesday in May (5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th), from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, where he will guide visitors through the exhibition, explaining the paintings and reading related poems.

Please do take the opportunity to visit the exhibition and introduce yourself to him as a fellow CAAPA member.
