In the sun-dappled woods and mountain glens we seek the spirit of the him, the wild man of the woods, the great god Pan. We hear him in the wind, in the rustling leaves, the woodland stream and the screech of the owl. We see him in the sunshine, the fertile earth, the majestic stag and the buzzard circling high above us. We call on him to awaken our wild, untamed spirits, to help us be courageous enough to seek freedom and unfettered joy, to feel our own hearts beating strong as a drum and to fill our lives with passion and beauty. Energy rises within us as the green fire erupts and the sun reaches its zenith on the solstice tide. Eo Pan!

This mosaic of Pan comes from the Hatay Archaeology Museum in Antakya.

Bast wears an aegis that has a lion's head on it, representing Sekhmet, as Bast and Sekhmet are two aspects of the same goddess; the gentle cat, and the fierce lion. Cat owner know the gentle cat is not always so. Cats still have the lion heart when needed, for protection or defence, or for territorial reasons - or when cats simply decide on a whim to be fierce, from paws to claws in an instant! We can visualise the aegis of Sekhmet over our own hearts when we have to deal with difficult or frightening people.

The Löwenmensch (Lion Man), one of the oldest known figurative sculptures in the world, was discovered in Hohlenstein-Stadel cave near Ulm (Germany). Carved from mammoth ivory around 40,000 years ago it depicts a half-human, half-lion figure. It offers an insight into the spiritual world of early humans - representing the beginnings of art, culture and creative thought. The figurine of the Löwenmensch is 31cm tall.

As the moon rises the black mirror beckons. Traditionally made of volcanic obsidian from the deep fires at the core of the Earth, it connects us to our origins and inner space. As we enter Capricorn, scry into its depths and look beyond reflections. What do you see, what omens does it show you for the year ahead?
