Yesterday's statement from the House of Bishops on Living in Love and Faith acknowledges both the depth of feeling across the Church and the complexity of the questions we continue to hold together. I am mindful that for many this will feel unresolved, and that sense of uncertainty can be painful and tiring. My prayer is that we continue to treat one another with generosity, honesty and care as we walk this path together. - Bishop Ruth

Earlier this year, Brenda Williams – former Church Warden, Scout Leader, Apple Trust Founding Trustee, Mothers’ Union leader, Liverpool Cathedral staff member and much more – was due to receive Maundy Money from King Charles at Durham Cathedral. ⛪

Tragically, her son Jonathan died just days before the service, only months after the passing of her husband Trevor.

Earlier this week, on behalf of King Charles as requested by The Royal High Almoner, Bishop Ruth prayed parts of the Maundy Thursday service with Brenda and her family. In a small and very moving gathering at Bishop’s Lodge, Brenda shared memories and her lifetime of service was warmly appreciated, with afternoon tea also marking her 90th birthday on 30 November (Advent Sunday). 💙🙏

This Michaelmas marked 10 years since I became a bishop - and September has essentially been my first full month here in Liverpool without any interruptions!

Here are just a few highlights from September:
✝️ Licensed new priests and a Reader
🙌 Confirmed candidates at St Anne’s, Stanley
🎓Visited schools and joined the headteachers’ conference
🍗Welcomed new clergy and families with a BBQ
🌍 Commissioned the new Tsedaqah community from Jamaica, the US and UK
⛪️ Hosted the College of Bishops here in Liverpool, reflecting on Hope
🌹 Worshipped with Christians in political life during the Labour Party Conference
đźšş Gathered 80 female clergy to hear their stories

It’s been full, joyful, and such a blessing to discover more of our diocese. Please keep me and our communities in your prayers as together we seek God’s best for Liverpool.

With love and prayers,
+Ruth

It was a joy to share with 80 of my sister clergy across the diocese in the Cathedral. (Too many to gather with me at Bishop’s Lodge!) ⛪

Some of us began ministry before women were able to become priests and others are very new to ordained ministry. This month I celebrate ten years as a bishop. Much has changed and there were moments of celebration for all that has been achieved. And there is more still to do. 🙌

We shall be appointing a new Dean of Women’s Ministry in the coming months and I would welcome thoughts as to the shape of this important role. 💭

We also shared concerns and feelings following the events which took place earlier in the year. We need to do more in caring for the wellbeing of all our clergy and lay leaders who give so much. đź«‚

The Church of England College of Bishops met in Liverpool this week. Around 120 bishops came together for prayer and worship, Bible Studies, workshops and presentations and fellowship.

On Tuesday morning the theme of this gathering, 'Hope' was explored in a workshop led by young people from The Triangle of Hope, which is an international community connecting The Dioceses of Kumasi, Ghana, VIrginia in the US and Liverpool. The workshop included teaching, introductions to the life and work of The Tsedaqah Community and Youth Pilgrimages, contributions online from Kumasi, Virginia and Jamaica, pilgrims and Tsedaqah community members past and present.

Afterwards, bishops commented that they had found the morning inspiring, challenging and hopeful. Our young people were tremendous and spoke incredibly powerfully. They then joined the bishops for lunch afterwards where conversation continued.

(Shown here with Bishop Ruth and also The Archbishop of York. Also Canon Mal Roger’s, Canon for Reconciliation and Canon Debra Walker who both contributed, and pilgrimage leaders Rev Lynne Connolly, Rebecca Hooton and David Walker).
