In today’s Faith Story, (written this time, rather than on video) Kathy Hebbs from Polperro shares a special moment which has shaped her faith and stayed with her for 30 years…
“In 1983 when I was 33 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. I had two operations to remove my Thyroid Gland and then some radiotherapy to try and kill off any remaining cancer cells.
My daughter Lucy was just three years old and I had a husband in his early 60’s so as you can imagine I was terrified. How on earth would they cope if I died? The few relatives we had were miles away in London.
On this particular day I was back at the hospital for some follow up scans and X-rays to check if there had been any spread.
I was back in the changing cubicle getting dressed. I always wore a cross and chain, mainly because it had been given to me by my gran, but I wasn’t really a church goer- although I think I did believe in God.
I was just fastening the chain with shaking fingers, when I experienced such a feeling of peace and calm , a feeling of complete safety.
It sounds mad, but I seemed to hear a voice - not like a road to Damascus voice - but inside my head that said “it’s alright, you’ll be alright, don’t worry’. That’s all I remember but that moment has stayed with me for over 30yrs.
As you can see, I didn’t die, I still have to go back each year for check ups but my daughter Lucy is now 38 with three lovely children of her own. Soon after that day, I started attending Polperro chapel on my own, Lucy joined the Sunday School, I became a member and a Sunday School leader. I’ve met some lovely people over the years and I say, long may it continue. I know that God spoke to me on that day and it changed my life and I feel truly blessed.”
