Diocese of Leicester

Diocese of Leicester The Diocese of Leicester, The Church of England in Leicester and Leicestershire Our vision is the Kingdom of God.

Shaped by God, we seek the growth of his Kingdom in the depth of our discipleship, the number of new disciples and in our loving service of the world. We are a family of more than 18,000 Christians who worship in church buildings, houses, community spaces and schools. We believe in encouraging every Christian to live out their faith in everyday life, as they pray, tell others about God, and demons

trate God’s love for the world in their actions. With over 320 churches, 234 parishes, almost 100 schools and academy trusts, and a rapidly growing number of fresh expressions of Church, taking in villages, market towns and the city of Leicester, we often describe ourselves as a rural diocese with urban heartlands. Please be aware that people using offensive language, post personal / racist
comments or post links to petitions will be permanently banned from posting. People who continuously argue with or provoke other posters will be banned for a seven day cooling off period. Comments made on a notification that have nothing to do with the subject matter will be deleted.

Members of the Leicester Diocesan Cursillo community recently attended the British Anglican Cursillo Conference in Northamptonshire, gaining fresh encouragement and ideas for supporting faith across the Diocese.

Cursillo (Spanish for “short course”) is a well-established Christian movement that offers a simple, powerful way of deepening faith. It is not a replacement for church life, but a companion to it – designed to support both lay people and clergy in their spiritual journey.

Through a relaxed Cursillo weekend centred on prayer, study, and action, new participants are invited to explore intentional Christian living and build lasting friendships. Many find the experience both renewing and transformative, helping them live out their faith more fully in everyday life.

Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Foundation marked the start of the new cricket season with its annual Season Blessing.

Held at the Uptonsteel County Ground, on Leicester’s Grace Road, the gathering brought together players, staff, local leaders and representatives from a wide range of faiths to collectively mark the beginning of another year of cricket.

The Season Blessing has become a key fixture in the Foundation’s calendar, highlighting the role cricket can play beyond the boundary, and recognising the power of the game to connect people through shared values of hope, togetherness and inclusion.

The event included a multi-faith blessing by religious and community leaders from across Leicestershire, in a service led by the Ven Richard Trethewey, Archdeacon of Leicester, and was a celebration of unity, reflection and community spirit.

In the final blessing, Richard said:
May the crease on which you bat always be smooth,
May the wind always carry the ball to the boundary,
May you always have a good team to support you;
And may the blessing of God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Be with you and with all those whom you love,
Now and for ever. Amen.

Clergy and lay leaders recently gathered for a Bishop’s Study Day, exploring how our faith inspires engagement with today’s social and political challenges.

From Bishop Martyn’s address on rebuilding trust in a “broken” society, to workshops on poverty, community cohesion, community organising, and trauma-informed safeguarding, the day was filled with insight and practical action.

The sun shone on Saturday 23 May for the Called Together service at Leicester Cathedral, as we lifted high and celebrated our lay ministers and the ministry they carry out across the Diocese.

It was joyful to see the Cathedral filled as families, friends, colleagues, and church communities, gathered to recognise and pray for new and existing lay ministers.
We were also encouraged to consider our own gifts and calling.

During the service, Bishop Martyn licensed seven new Associate Ministers and relicensed a large number of existing Associate Ministers, Readers, Pastoral Assistants and Pioneers.
He also commissioned the Lay Ministry Council – those called to represent the Fellowship of Lay Ministers in the Diocese, to support them, advocate for them, and work in partnership with others to enable their flourishing in ministry.

The Called Together service is traditionally held at Pentecost to mark the Holy Spirit appointing the first lay ministers to be sent out.
Those who were newly licensed received a Bible as their guide to living as disciples of Jesus and made a commitment to continue in lives of prayer and service.
