I will help thee, saith the Lord. - Isa 41:14

This morning, let us hear the voice of the Lord Jesus speaking to each one of us: “I Myself will help you.” It is such a small thing for Me, your God, to help you. Think about what I have already done. Why wouldn’t I help you now? I bought you with My blood. I died for you. If I’ve done the greater thing, will I not do the lesser? Helping you is the least I will do for you. I have done more, and I will do more. Before the world began, I chose you. I made a covenant for you. I set aside My glory and became human for you. I gave up My life for you. If I did all this, surely I will help you now. In helping you, I am only giving you what I’ve already purchased for you. If you needed a thousand times more help, I would provide it. What you need is much for you, but nothing for Me to give. ‘Help you?’ Fear not! If an ant came to your barn asking for a handful of grain, it wouldn’t harm you to give it. In the same way, you are just a tiny creature at the door of My all-sufficiency. ‘I Myself will help you.’”

O my soul, is this not enough? Do you need more strength than the omnipotence of the Trinity? Do you need more wisdom than that found in the Father? More love than that shown by the Son? More power than the Holy Spirit offers? Bring your empty pitcher here! This well is more than enough to fill it. Gather up your needs—your emptiness, your sorrows, your troubles—and bring them to the overflowing river of God’s goodness. What more could you want? Go forward, my soul, in this strength. The Eternal God is your helper!

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed. I am your God, and I will still give you aid.”

God is so good.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. - 1 Pet 5:7

It’s a wonderful way to calm our sorrows when we can remind ourselves, "He cares for me." Christian, don’t bring dishonor to your faith by always wearing a look of worry—come and cast your burdens on the Lord. You’re struggling under a weight that your Father could carry with ease. What seems like a crushing burden to you is as light as a speck of dust to Him. Nothing is sweeter than to:

“Lie passive in God’s hands,
And know no will but His.”

O suffering child, be patient. God has not forgotten you in His plans. The One who feeds the sparrows will surely provide for you too. Don’t give in to despair; keep hoping, always. Take up the shield of faith and stand firm against the waves of trouble, and your hardships will come to an end. There is Someone who cares for you! His eyes are always on you! His heart is full of compassion for your pain! His mighty hand will bring you the help you need! The darkest cloud will soon break into showers of mercy. The deepest gloom will give way to the light of morning. If you are part of His family, He will heal your wounds and bind up your broken heart. Don’t doubt His grace just because you are going through hard times—believe that He loves you just as much in your trials as He does in your moments of happiness. How peaceful and joyful your life could be if you would leave your worries in the hands of the God who provides!

With just a little oil in the jar and a handful of flour in the pot, Elijah survived the famine, and you will too. If God cares for you, why should you worry? Can you trust Him with your soul but not with your body? He has never refused to carry your burdens—He has never grown weary under their weight. So, come now, my soul, stop worrying and leave all your cares in the hands of a gracious God!

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. - Gen 1:4

Light is truly good, especially since it was born from God’s command: “Let there be light.” We who enjoy it should be more grateful for it than we often are, and we should see more of God in it and through it. Physical light is said by Solomon to be sweet, but gospel light is far more precious, for it reveals eternal truths and nourishes our souls.

When the Holy Spirit grants us spiritual light and opens our eyes to see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, we gain a true understanding of sin and our own position. We see God in His holiness, the plan of mercy He offers, and the world to come as described in Scripture.

Spiritual light has many different aspects—knowledge, joy, holiness, and life—but all of them are divinely good. If the light we receive is this good, how much greater must the source of that light be, and how glorious the place where He reveals Himself! O Lord, since light is so good, givemore of it, and give us more of Yourself, the true light.

Whenever something good comes into the world, separation is necessary. Light and darkness cannot mix; God has divided them, so we must not blur the lines. As children of light, we must not engage in the deeds, beliefs, or deceptions of darkness. We, who are children of the day, must be sober, honest, and bold in the work of our Lord, leaving the works of darkness to those who will dwell in it forever.

Our churches should, through discipline, separate light from darkness, and we should do the same by living distinctly apart from the world. In our judgments, actions, teaching, and associations, we mustmust distinguish between what is precious and what is vile, maintaining the distinction God established on the very first day. O Lord Jesus, be our light throughout this day, for Your light is the light of all people.

Continue in prayer. - Col 4:2

It’s amazing how much of the Bible is about prayer, whether through examples, commands, or promises. You can’t open the Bible without finding mentions of people praying, starting with “Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord,” and ending with a heartfelt “Amen” at the close of Scripture. Examples are everywhere: Jacob wrestling with God, Daniel praying three times a day, David passionately calling out to God. We see Elijah on the mountain, Paul and Silas praying in prison. And then there are countless commands and promises about prayer.

What does this show us? It highlights the importance and necessity of prayer. If God emphasizes prayer so much in His Word, He surely wants it to be a major part of our lives. We are in such deep need that we must continue praying until we reach heaven. If you feel like you don’t need anything, you probably don’t realize how poor you are.If you have no requests for God, may He show you how much you need His mercy! A person who doesn’t pray is someone without Christ. Prayer is the whisper of a new believer, the battle cry of a struggling Christian, and the final words of a dying saint. It is the breath, strength, comfort, and honor of a Christian. If you are a child of God, you will seek your Father’s presence and live in His love. Pray that this year you may be holy, humble, passionate, and patient. Pray for a deeper relationship with Christ and more time in the banquet hall of His love. Pray to be a blessing to others and live more for the glory of your Savior. Let this year’s motto be, “Continue in prayer.”

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. - Isa 49:16

No doubt part of the wonder wrapped up in the word "Behold" is stirred by the unbelieving lament in the preceding sentence. Zion said, "The Lord has forsaken me! My God has forgotten me." How shocked the divine mind seems to be at such faithless doubt! What could be more astounding than the baseless fears and suspicions of God’s favored people?

The Lord’s gentle word of correction should cause us to blush. He says, "How could I forget you—when I’ve engraved you on the palms of My hands? How dare you doubt My constant remembrance, when your very image is set upon My flesh?" O unbelief, how strange you are! We hardly know what is more amazing—God’s faithfulness or our unbelief! He keeps His promise a thousand times, yet the next trial we face makes us question Him again. He never fails. He is never a dry well, never a setting sun, never a fading v***r. Yet we are constantly troubled by worries, harassed by doubts, and plagued by fears, as if our God were a mirage in the desert.

"Behold" is a word meant to inspire admiration. And truly, here is something to marvel at! Heaven and earth should be amazed that rebels like us are granted such closeness to the heart of infinite love, as to be engraved on the palms of His hands. "I have engraved you." It doesn’t say, "Your name." The name is there, but that’s not all—"I have engraved you." See how complete this is! I have engraved your person, your image, your story, your circumstances, your sins, your temptations, your weaknesses, your needs, your works! I have engraved all of you—everything about you, all that concerns you is right there. Will you ever say again that God has forgotten you when He has engraved you on His own hands?
