Brentford & Isleworth Quaker Meeting

Brentford & Isleworth Quaker Meeting We are a faith group committed to equality and peace. Join us in the stillness of a Quaker meeting. Welcome to Brentford and Isleworth Quakers.

Quakerism is a way of life rather than a set of beliefs. Quakers seek to experience God directly, within themselves and in their relationships with others and the world around them. These direct encounters with the Divine are where Quakers find meaning and purpose. Join us for our meeting for worship on Sundays at 10.30. You are very welcome! The Meeting House is also a space that can also be used

for children parties, public events, exhibitions, writing clubs, musical rehearsal spaces and much more. For more information please visit our website http://www.brentfordandisleworthquakers.org.uk

Please note that this is an alcohol-free venue.

Whether someone is moved to speak as last week, or there's a full hour of stillness as today, it's still a collective endeavour, opening ourselves to the spirit together, a gathered meeting.

Brentford and Isleworth Quaker Meeting House looking splendid in the spring sunshine. All safe and sound here today. The disused scout hut at the railway line up Quakers Lane was broken into last night, not us. (Some google maps mix the two buildings up.) Each Sunday we welcome anyone wishing to share our silent time together focussing on peace, simplicity, equality and care for the planet in a world disrupted by war and conflict.

We have a choice – do something, or do nothing. With one small flicker of light, you can dispel so much darkness. These were the messages from this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony marked by Hounslow Council titled ‘Bridging the Generations’. With few actual survivors now from the N**i death camps, it is younger generations stepping up to share experiences of earlier generations and by doing so linking it to the present.
Eliano Ostro, a young script writer and creative shared the moving story of her grandfather Max and his string of lucky escapes as a teenager after he jumped from the train taking his family and many other Jews to Treblinka in Poland.
We were reminded that attacks against Jews, even in Britain, are increasing and Jews no longer feel safe here, in their own country. A member of a local synagogue shared with me that attendance there has increased of late as local Jews seek security within their own community.
The event highlighted the power of intergenerational dialogue – of listening to those who came before and of sharing those stories with those who come after. We were encouraged to recognise and speak out against antisemitism. We have a choice and must take it.

Brentford and Isleworth Friends held their annual appeal for Quaker Social Action this week to coincide with the Big Give starting mid-day tomorrow. This great charity does such valuable and imaginative work in East London and, for some of their projects, nationally – campaigning and practical support for funeral costs, coaching for people on low income, a space to cook, a community library. Whether regularly or a one off, this is the week to donate!

Important reminder that in addition to those who serve in the British forces, war affects so many others, civilians as well as combatants. We must continue to work for listening and reconciliation to reduce the risk of conflict. Brentford and Isleworth was represented at the alternative Remembrance Sunday ceremony at Tavistock Square last week.

This Remembrance Sunday, Every Casualty Counts, hosted by Quakers in Britain, remembered all those killed in wars by projecting a Virtual Cenotaph onto the front of Friends House.

Wear a white poppy for peace

In these sombre days of Remembrance, some choose to wear a red poppy, some a white poppy. Or both. Or neither.
The first red poppies were sold by the Royal British Legion in 1921 to support World War I veterans and to remember service men and women killed in conflict. In 1933, the white poppies were introduced by the Women's Cooperative Guild, to say very clearly, “No more wars. No more killing. Let us work for peace."
This year, on Remembrance Day, Sunday 9 November
• Remember all victims of war, of all nationalities, both civilian and military
• Challenge war and militarism
• Wear a white poppy for peace and seek nonviolent solutions to conflict today
Today white poppies are produced by a UK-based workers cooperative. They are recyclable and plastic free. They are distributed by the Peace Pledge Union and available locally at Brentford and Isleworth Quaker Meeting from this Sunday.

Another successful day on Saturday, taking part in London Open House. About the forty visitors but in contrast to last year, the majority stayed a long time to see everything thoroughly. Some were local people, including one who came and then returned with her neighbour. Others came from much further away (including suburban Tokyo). The Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow, Councillor Amy Croft also dropped in.

In addition to information on the history of the Meeting House there was a display of artworks by member Julia Langrish, workshops offering bracelet making, crochet and resin modelling and an illustrated talk by author Bessie White on her great grandfather, an ex-pat engineer in Moscow in late Tzarist times.
