About 150 years ago, there was a great revival in Wales. As a result of this, many missionaries came to north-east India to spread the Gospel. The region known as Assam was comprised of hundreds of tribes who were primitive and aggressive head-hunters
Into these hostile and aggressive communities, came a group of missionaries from the American Baptist Missions spreading the message of love, peace and hope in Jesus Christ. Naturally, they were not welcomed. One missionary succeeded in converting a man, his wife, and two children. This man’s faith proved contagious and many villagers began to accept Christianity.
Angry, the village chief summoned all the villagers. He then called the family who had first converted to renounce their faith in public or face ex*****on. Moved by the Holy Spirit, the man said:
“I have decided to follow Jesus.”
Enraged at the refusal of the man, the chief ordered his archers to arrow down the two children. As both boys lay twitching on the floor, the chief asked, “Will you deny your faith? You have lost both your children. You will lose your wife too.”
But the man replied:
“Though no one joins me, still I will follow.”
The chief was beside himself with fury and ordered his wife to be arrowed down. In a moment she joined her two children in death. Now he asked for the last time, “I will give you one more opportunity to deny your faith and live.” In the face of death the man said the final memorable lines:

“The cross before me, the world behind me. No turning back.”
He was shot dead like the rest of his family. But with their deaths, a miracle took place. The chief who had ordered the killings was moved by the faith of the man. He wondered, “Why should this man, his wife and two children die for a Man who lived in a far-away land on another continent some 2,000 years ago? There must be some remarkable power behind the family’s faith, and I too want to taste that faith.”
In a spontaneous confession of faith, he declared, “I too belong to Jesus Christ!” When the crowd heard this from the mouth of their chief, the whole village accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
The song is based on the last words of Nokseng, a man from Garo tribe of Assam (now Meghalaya and some in Assam), India. It is today the song of the Garo people.

Going back many years to when our son was only around 6 years old. We had attended a Christian camp called Hollybush in the UK. The event had a second hand shop brick and brac, tabletop style setup.
Every year we would attend, and every year partway through the week between services we would attend the swinging baths.
My son approaches me and makes a statement that he wanted some swinging goggles, he was specific in colour and type and had a limit on pocket money that he was issued each day.
My answer was that he needed to pray about it. So he did. There and then in the caravan, dropping to his knees he made a simple prayer asking Jesus for the goggles.

He jumped to his feet with ready sure faith that God had answered and ran through the field to the shop. Looking through all the boxes and tables he started to say “it's not there, it's not there” It was at this point that the shop owner spoke up. “Are you looking for some swimming goggles” “we just had some brought in before you came” She reaches into a bag and brings out the exact colour and type that he had been asking for. More so, she then quoted the exact money that he had left in his pocket.
This is a lesson that has stayed with him his whole life. He prays for bigger things than Goggles now. But his faith is set on a God who cares about the colour and style of goggles.

Matt Redman worship leader wrote a song in the late 1990s called the heart of worship.

The background story is an interesting one
The church at the time had been expanding, Redman leading the worship at the time but there was something that was just not sparking. Something missing.
Eventually the pastor remarked upon it. He states that he sensed that their worship as a church gathering was going spiritually flat, that the congregation were just going through the motions, singing the songs and as a result the worship wasn’t flowing from the heart like true Christians are called to worship.
His solution was a brave one. He removed the sound system for a season. People gathered together with just their voices. So they stripped everything back until they found the heart of worship again.

During this season, the pastor challenged the congregation to be participants in worship, not consumers. To come ready to engage with God for themselves, from the heart, not just watch with their eyes. He wanted them to come as worshipers, not as concert-goers

Redman went on to write these lyrics.

Isaiah echoes the song of Moses from Exodus. It was in the highest state of oppression. Little Judah surrounded, oppressed, beat down, pursued. For both Isaiah and Moses, they knew what it was to have lost their own strength. But both found a strength beyond their own means. The only song left would have been one of the blues, sorrow and pain on every side. But their song was beyond their emotions. It was a song from the Lord.
We worship in spirit and truth, not emotion and inward reflection!
You may be scared tonight. You may be down and marking yourself as out. But take the insight from these men of God, Lift your eyes out of the valley, to the God who saves. He is with you even in this dark time. Allow for your spirit to be impacted by his spirit for he is your song and strength.

Jeremiah 17:8 You are blessed when you place your trust in the Lord. It may be hard to hold the faith at times, but allow for him to be your strength and your song for you will be like a tree planted by waters. Do not worry about the hard times.
