I know, I know - it is not even spring yet and we are already planning our next Christmas! The date for this year's Carols by Candlelight will be on Saturday, 5 December at 3.30 pm. On 19 July, slightly ahead of her feast day (of 22 July) we will celebrate our patron saint, St Mary Magdalene. The service is also scheduled at 3.30 pm. Please put the dates in your diaries - they fill up so quickly!

Now that the days are getting longer and warmer why not visit us at Caldecote and soak up a peaceful atmosphere inside the church, literally far from the madding crowd. Thought to be the smallest church in Hertfordshire (at Christmas we can accommodate around 45 visitors - at a push!) it still retains some original features, despite its small size and a slightly austere interior. For instance, have you looked at the base of our font? It has some mysterious marks, presumably scratched into the stone by way of protection against evil. The font itself is original, probably from the 15th century, with sumptuous carvings on its surface, and deep enough to fully submerge a baby!

Oh, what a night! Thank you all for making our Carols by Candlelight 2025 such a special event. And a huge thank you to Clare who so graciously agreed to play her viola for us. Something different altogether - who knows, we may interweave music with carols and readings in the future? Unfortunately your host forgot her photographer's hat and so there are pictures from the event ... 🤷‍♀️😒😢 apart from a lovely snapshot of Clare. And, talking about nights, what a fantastic moon we saw when we were locking up after the service. An icing on the cake? 🍰

What do you see? To me it is a remnant of a blocked up Norman window. Some argued that it was a niche for a statue of a saint. Somebody even claimed to see a faint outline of a wall painting inside ... Not exactly in line with the door it is nevertheless a reminder of a rich history of the fabric of our tiny church.
