Wild meadows serve two purposes, to provide biodiversity for wildlife and to enhance the appearance of an underutilised, not very attractive area. We have just such a space in the Churchyard behind Hersham surgery.
In November we planted a hedge (which has just started to produce leaves) and on Bank Holiday Monday our churchyard team continued their efforts of turning this neglected area of grass into a wildflower meadow, planting it with seeds which will grow into colourful flowers attracting both insects and visitors. We also hope to put in a convenient bench so passers-by can stop, rest and enjoy the space.
It is claimed that one healthy meadow can be home to over one hundred species of wildflowers, which in turn support other meadow wildlife by providing them with food throughout the year. Hopefully we will all enjoy the benefits for years to come, so do look out for the new growth as you stroll through the churchyard.
