A little bit of parish history - today marks 110 years since the Battle of the Somme began. Someone reminded me recently that over 400 parishioners of St Patrick’s died during the 4 years of World War 1. The altar gates that were once at the front of the church were erected in their memory. When they were removed, the marble was used to create the current altar table. If you look closely, you will be able to see the gates in this photograph.

Sad news for those who have fought to save this building

So it was confirmed in a planning committee this morning that the Hillhead Baptist Church, designed by Glasgow architect Thomas Lennox Watson in 1883, is to be demolished. Tied at 3 votes for and 3 against, the Chair cast the deciding vote in favour of the applicant, Wemyss Properties.

There was a story in this month’s Flourish about the refurbishment of St Peter’s. It mentions that the parish boundary has changed to accommodate people from St Patrick’s.
I have been asked by some parishioners to gently remind everyone that St Patrick’s church building is still open and services are running as normal for now.
