St Ninian's Pollokshields

St Ninian's Pollokshields St Ninian's Scottish Episcopal Church - open, inclusive and and welcoming. St. Ninian’s is heir to a proud and rich history. People make the Church.

The building is a very fine example of high Gothic Victorian splendour containing many architectural details. Its history lends itself to a rather more formal approach to worship. However, buildings, no matter how grand, do not make the Church. The congregation understands the needs of a new world. St Ninian’s allows for the best of the long traditions of Christian service combined with the vibrancy of new ways of praise and service.

Fantastic news!

The Diocese of Edinburgh has chosen a new Bishop, following the election yesterday (14 February) of the Rt Rev Dr Dagmar Winter.

The Bishop-Elect of Edinburgh is the current Suffragan Bishop of Huntingdon, and will be translated to her new post later in the year.

Bishop Dagmar was elected following the retirement of the Rt Rev Dr John Armes who served the Diocese as Bishop for 13 years. She accepted the post following a vote of the Electoral Synod where she received over half of the votes in each house, with clergy and lay representatives from congregations across the Diocese voting.

Bishop Dagmar was ordained priest in 1997 in the Diocese of Rochester, Church of England, serving there and in the Diocese of Newcastle, and was made a Canon of Newcastle Cathedral in 2011. She was consecrated Bishop of Huntingdon in the Diocese of Ely in 2019. She is also currently Acting Bishop of Ely, a position she has held since 2023.

Speaking just after the election, the new Bishop-Elect said: “I am hugely honoured to have been elected as the next Bishop of Edinburgh and would like to thank most warmly all those involved in the thorough process, indeed, in electing me.

“I rejoice in the diversity and inclusivity of the Diocese of Edinburgh and can’t wait to get to know all the clergy and people in the charges from the Tweed to the Firth of Forth – your joys, your challenges, your opportunities. I firmly believe that the Scottish Episcopal Church has a unique voice to share in today’s world, and I am committed to supporting and encouraging all who contribute to its mission and ministry and to raising its profile further. I also look forward to joining the College of Bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

“As I pray for you, please pray for me as I prepare to leave Ely and join you in Edinburgh.

“Only last night I confirmed some young people, preaching on John 20:19–end, and told them ‘as Jesus was sent, so he sends us’. It will be exciting to discover with you where God will lead us. The one who calls us is faithful – this is our joy, our hope and our strength.”

Responding to the result, the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Most Rev Mark Strange said: “I am delighted to welcome Bishop Dagmar as Bishop-Elect into this new season of ministry in the Scottish Episcopal Church, and I am looking forward to welcoming her to the College of Bishops. The gifts she brings will enhance the life and mission of the Church.

“I would also like to thank everyone who took part in the process – those who offered themselves and tested their discernment, as well as members of the Electoral Synod, Diocesan Officers, Preparatory Committee, diocesan staff and Bishop Andrew Swift, Convener of the Electoral Process, for their prayerful work.

“Please keep Bishop Dagmar in your prayers as we plan her installation and new beginnings in Scotland.”

Bishop Nick’s chosen charity this year is the DAISY Project.

DAISY: Supporting Women and Children to Heal and Thrive

DAISY is a domestic abuse support and advocacy service that has operated in Glasgow for over 25 years. We are a trusted, community-based organisation with a strong grassroots ethos, working alongside women and children at every stage of their journey away from abuse. Our model is flexible, relational and survivor-led, allowing us to meet people where they are and walk with them for as long as support is needed.

We are privileged to receive core funding from the Glasgow Communities Fund and the National Lottery. This funding enables us to deliver the formal and statutory elements of our service, including running costs, risk assessment and safety planning. Many of the women and children we support face immense challenges: reporting abuse to the police, giving evidence in court, homelessness, and the trauma of being uprooted from friends, family and familiar communities. DAISY provides short-, medium-, and long-term support, often over many years, to ensure families are not left to face these challenges alone.

One woman we supported describes the impact of DAISY far better than we can: “Whenever things got to breaking point, DAISY was there. Even when I pulled away because of what was happening to me, I was always welcomed back with open arms. DAISY supported me through reporting to the police, helped build me up as a person, and even provided security for my home, including a Ring doorbell, which gave me peace of mind. DAISY made me and my family feel safe.”

The families we work with often experience multiple layers of disadvantage. Many women have been subjected to financial abuse and are left struggling to meet even the most basic needs. Donations allow us to deliver our vital recovery strand of work—support that statutory funding cannot cover. This includes emergency help with electricity, nappies, food, and essential household items for families who have fled abuse and are starting again with very little. Being able to respond quickly and compassionately at moments of crisis makes a profound difference.

Trauma recovery is central to DAISY’s work. Once families reach a place of safety, we focus on rebuilding confidence, resilience and independence. We believe that positive experiences, creativity and connection are powerful tools for healing. Activities such as yoga, glass art, family days out and community-based learning help create joyful memories, strengthen relationships and promote wellbeing. A parent recently shared this reflection after one such activity:

“He had such an amazing time. The picture he drew was of himself lying on the grass after scoring a goal, sunshine in the corner. He was so proud and still talking about it hours later. It was wonderful to see him reflecting so positively about his day. Thank you for a day to remember.”

DAISY is committed to ensuring women and children not only survive domestic abuse but are supported to heal and thrive within their local communities. We warmly welcome the support of churches and faith groups who share our values of compassion, dignity and justice, and who wish to help us continue this life-changing work.
