✝️ Sunday Worship at Glasgow West Corps
This morning’s worship was led by our Corps Officer, Major Wayne Duffy, as we focused on our Self‑Denial partners and took part in our Altar Service, giving financially to support the work of The Salvation Army in Estonia. https://www.salvationist.org.uk/faith/giving-fundraising/self-denial
(Before worship began, we prayed for Major Sara Duffy and our friends at Glasgow City Centre Corps, where Sara was leading worship today.)
🌍 The Heart of Self‑Denial
The Self‑Denial Appeal began 140 years ago, in 1886, when a Salvation Army officer pledged to go without pudding for a whole year and donate the money to the Army’s international work. General William Booth was so inspired that he made Self‑Denial an annual part of Salvationist discipleship.
For Salvationists around the world, Self‑Denial is a practical expression of following Jesus — giving, caring, and supporting one another so that people everywhere can discover the fullness of life Jesus promised:
As a global movement, The Salvation Army helps people flourish physically, professionally, socially, and spiritually — here in the UK & Ireland and across our worldwide Army.
🎶 Music Ministry
Our Songsters shared “God, the Source of All” by David Cunningham and Andrew Blyth — a beautiful reminder of the Trinity:
• God the Father, source of all creation
• Jesus the Son, who loved us to the cross
• The Holy Spirit, who guides, teaches, and sustains us
The final verse prayed:
“Source and well-spring, living water,
Three in one and one in three.
With your love, enfold, indwell us,
Mend our hearts and set us free.”
During the giving of our tithes and offerings, David and Seb sensitively played Gowans & Larsson’s “His Provisions”, reminding us that God meets us in our weakness and hears our prayers.
📖 Scripture:
Mark 12:41–44 — The Widow’s Offering
Jesus watched as people placed their gifts into the temple treasury. Many wealthy people gave large amounts, but a poor widow offered two tiny coins — all she had to live on. Jesus declared that she had given more than all the others, because she gave from her poverty, trusting God with her whole life.
🕊️ Sermon:
Sacrificial Giving (Major Wayne Duffy)
Major Wayne explored the deep contrast in this passage:
• The scribes, who exploited the vulnerable
• The widow, who trusted God completely
Her two coins made almost no sound in the temple’s trumpet‑shaped offering chests (shofaroth), yet Jesus heard something far louder: a whole life offered to God (holon ton bion).
We were challenged to consider:
• What injustices do we see today?
• What are we willing to risk for a deeper connection with God?
• How might sacrificial giving become a channel of God’s grace?
Major Wayne shared powerful examples of generosity from communities in South Sudan who, despite famine and conflict, welcomed displaced people and shared what little they had — a living picture of God’s love.
He reminded us of Timothy Keller’s words:
“When God’s grace truly liberates you, your money becomes a form of God’s grace.”
Giving is not only financial. It includes:
• Time
• Encouragement
• Kindness
• Presence
• Mentoring
And generosity transforms us — rewiring our brains for joy, lowering stress, and strengthening connection.
If Jesus could use two tiny coins to teach the world for thousands of years, imagine what He can do with a community giving sacrificially, motivated by love and liberated by grace.
Our hope is found in Jesus Christ.
What will you give to bless someone else this week?
