In 1215 that King John signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede near Windsor which placed limits on royal authority and marked the origins of English civil liberties. At the signing of the charter was William de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey. It was said that King John and de Warenne attended an important meeting with the rebel barons at the Church of St John the Baptist in Erith to negotiate the details.

The arms of de Warenne are incorporated into the Erith Mural in recognition of this (possible) event. The mural, created by artist William Mitchell 1968-70 and resembling stained glass, portrays scenes connected to Erith’s history. It was located on the outer wall of the former Riverside Swimming Baths, but in 2010 it was restored and relocated to Erith town centre.
