The Great Commission
We heard of the call of the disciples in our Gospel reading this morning. To begin with they achieve very little, but with the fulness of faith in Christ, strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit, they fulfil of the vocation Christ offers them - the reason the Church exists. The baton of proclaiming the Gospel is handed on to us. We dare not fail.

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28: 16-end)

St Bart’s organ - a travelled instrument!
When the the ‘big church’ first opened in 1874, a harmonium led the music of worship. At some stage a Holditch was installed and later enlarged, filling two of the bays to the left of the sanctuary. In 1901, a three manual instrument by J W Walker & Sons was presented and erected on an extraordinary structure (presumably designed by Henry Wilson) where the pulpit now stands. Members of the congregation sarcastically called it ‘the cottage,’ complaining that it blocked the view of the altar for many worshippers. In 1906 Henry Wilson designed the west gallery, and the organ was moved by the local firm of Morgan & Smith and divided on either side. The firm added two 16’ Open Metal stops (used in the new cases) to Great and Pedal, and also the Pedal Trombone. The large organ gallery accommodated not just the organ, but a very large choir, and, on Festivals, an orchestra.

Thought for the week remembering that this is month dedicated to the Sacred Heart:
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not a distant, unattainable concept. It is a human heart, just like ours. This heart is not beyond our grasp, but rather, it is intimately connected to our own. All we need to do is open ourselves to it and believe. The Sacred Heart is not a mere symbol of divinity. It is the heart of humanity, of Jesus, who experienced all we do and more. In times of pain, it’s easy to feel isolated. But the Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us that we are never alone. His heart is our heart, beating with love in our bodies and souls. No amount of doubt or fear can silence the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It has been in sync with our hearts since the dawn of time, and it will continue until we are united in the fullness of God. THOUGHTS ON ENCOURAGEMENT
Reflecting on the Readings for Sunday 14th June
from Fr Michael (Hon Ass Priest - St Bart’s, Brighton)
The 11th Sunday of the Year.
Gospel: Matthew 9:36–10:8

At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Thursday 11th June Mass at 12 noon @ St Bart’s Brighton
Feast of St Barnabas - kindly offered by Father Ben Scott

Saint Barnabas, son of encouragement, you listened to the Gospel from Christ Himself, witnessed His miracles, and allowed His saving message to transform your life. You spent the rest of your life preaching the Good News and saving many souls. Please pray that I will dedicate my life to the mission to which I am called. Saint Barnabas, pray for me.
Jesus, I trust in You.

JUNE - MONTH DEDICATED TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
No matter what we are going through or experiencing, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is ever burning with love for us, seeking to heal our hurts, fears, failures and sinfulness.

The Heart of the Good Shepherd tells us that his love is limitless; it is never exhausted and it never gives up . . . The Heart of the Good Shepherd reaches out to us, above all to those who are most distant. There the needle of his compass inevitably points, there we see a particular ‘weakness’ of his love, which desires to embrace all and lose none.” Our sins are no longer a reason to become discouraged in our longing to be close to God. Our Lord allows us to experience our own weakness, which enables us to be humble. But He counts on our effort so that, spurred by his grace, we get up again when we fall. Sometimes “the history of salvation is worked out ‘in hope against hope’ (Rom 4:18), through our weaknesses. All too often, we think that God works only through our better part, yet most of his plans are realized in and despite our frailty.”

CORPUS CHRISTI 2026
A beautiful Mass, Procession and Benediction today, a lovely Tantum Ergo by Faure and a feeling of great holiness within our church. I am struck by the number of young people, many of them students studying in the city, seeking to know more about faith and tradition. Today I had two people enquiring about baptism and confirmation. It is humbling to see the Sacred Liturgy drawing people to God.

Part of today’s homily:
In receiving the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood, we become living bread for the world. Our brokenness, our suffering, and death to the old life, become resurrection and new life as Christ’s body on earth. Strengthened by the Mass, we are called to reveal the fulness of life found in Jesus Christ alone. On the door of our tabernacle is a figure which many mistake for the Lord. Yet what Henry Wilson (the designer) depicts is the Church - of which you and I are members – shown as a crowned and robed youth, ever made new by the sacrament – his hands are outstretched and grasp the living vine which surrounds him. Thus, we are to know that through the Blessed Sacrament, as members of the Body of Christ, we are ever strengthened and renewed.

How can we be beacons of light to the darkness of this world? How can we bring life to those drowning in moral chaos? How can we be true food and drink to the weary and desperate? Well, I, for one, profoundly believe that as the family of Christ gathered around the altar – we are all empowered to do this – each in our own way. The miracle is that this is brought about through the elements of bread and wine. Through these simple gifts our Lord comes to us in great love and humility and transforms us, enabling us to partake in the fulness of true life; in being thus transformed, we ourselves become nourishment for the world through his love. Nothing could be more wonderful.
(Father Michael - Hon Ass. Priest)

BAPTISMAL JOY AT ST BART’S
What a priviledge to baptise a young member of our church family into new life as part of the Body of Christ today. Sometimes we forget the wonder of our own baptisms, something St Gregory of Nyssa describes wonderfully:

Through Christ, and in our own baptism - ‘all is turned to joy for us that were the heirs of sin: Paradise, yea, heaven itself may be trodden by humanity: and the creation, in the world and above the world, that once was at variance with itself, is knit together in friendship: and we are enabled to join in the angels' song, offering the worship of their praise to God. For all these things then let us sing to God that hymn of joy, which lips touched by the Spirit long ago sang loudly: Let my soul be joyful in the Lord: for He has clothed me with a garment of salvation, and has put upon me a robe of gladness: as on a bridegroom He has set a mitre upon me, and as a bride has He adorned me with fair array. And verily the Adorner of the bride is Christ, Who is, and was, and shall be, blessed now and for evermore. Amen.’
