CORPUS CHRISTI 2026
A beautiful Mass, Procession and Benediction today, a lovely Tantum Ergo by Faure and a feeling of great holiness within our church. I am struck by the number of young people, many of them students studying in the city, seeking to know more about faith and tradition. Today I had two people enquiring about baptism and confirmation. It is humbling to see the Sacred Liturgy drawing people to God.
Part of today’s homily:
In receiving the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood, we become living bread for the world. Our brokenness, our suffering, and death to the old life, become resurrection and new life as Christ’s body on earth. Strengthened by the Mass, we are called to reveal the fulness of life found in Jesus Christ alone. On the door of our tabernacle is a figure which many mistake for the Lord. Yet what Henry Wilson (the designer) depicts is the Church - of which you and I are members – shown as a crowned and robed youth, ever made new by the sacrament – his hands are outstretched and grasp the living vine which surrounds him. Thus, we are to know that through the Blessed Sacrament, as members of the Body of Christ, we are ever strengthened and renewed.
How can we be beacons of light to the darkness of this world? How can we bring life to those drowning in moral chaos? How can we be true food and drink to the weary and desperate? Well, I, for one, profoundly believe that as the family of Christ gathered around the altar – we are all empowered to do this – each in our own way. The miracle is that this is brought about through the elements of bread and wine. Through these simple gifts our Lord comes to us in great love and humility and transforms us, enabling us to partake in the fulness of true life; in being thus transformed, we ourselves become nourishment for the world through his love. Nothing could be more wonderful.
