Friday Fun, so let’s Find Out!…🧐🕵️‍♀️

Following on the same theme of the Church tower, did you know that a room inside the tower became, The Tower Room Museum, the very first Museum in East Grinstead! 🏛️

Documented in the Parish Magazine archives, dated June 1926 The Rev. G. Golding-Bird asked his community for local donations of relics and curiosities, “to hand down to prosperity something of the atmosphere of the bygone East Grinstead”.📖📜⛪️

What happened to the museum collection, I hear you ask? 📣

Good question 🙋🏼‍♀️ you can find out the answer by clicking the link 🔗 below at the current East Grinstead Museum…

It’s Friday… 🗓️🧐🔎⁉️
So let’s answer, why is the churches tower so high? ⛪️ 🧗‍♂️

Have you ever wondered what the view looks like from the top of St. Swithun’s?

Well, here it is...looking down on the A22 towards Forest Row.

Standing at around 100 feet (30 metres) high or the length of a Boeing 737-500 ✈️ 🤯 the tower isn't just impressive – it has a rather unique story behind it!

When the church was rebuilt in the late 18th century after the original tower collapsed (more on that story soon 🤫) local MP Charles Abbot, reportedly requested that the new tower be built 25–30 feet taller than its predecessor so he could spot the weather vane from his estate in nearby Forest Row. Now that's what you call keeping an eye on the local weather! 🌦️☔️🌧️🌈

With its battlemented top, striking corner pinnacles, and spectacular views across the surrounding countryside, St. Swithun’s Church remains one of the area's most distinctive and iconic landmarks ⛪️
