*"Bearing the Marks of Jesus" by Pastor Oliver Afrifa Andoh Kesson*

In this thought-provoking message based on Galatians 6:14 and 2 Corinthians 4:10, Pastor Oliver emphasised that true belonging to Christ was not proven by outward appearance or religious activity, but by a life marked by faithfulness, sacrifice, and obedience. He explained that Paul the Apostle wrote passionately to confront false teachings that elevated works over grace, reminding believers that salvation came through faith, not outward performance.

Pastor further highlighted that while false teachers in Galatia promoted physical signs like circumcision as evidence of devotion, Paul pointed instead to the “marks” he carried on his body. These were not symbols of shame, but visible proof of his allegiance to Christ—scars gained through persecution, suffering, and unwavering commitment to the gospel. Rather than boasting in status or credentials, Paul boasted in the cross and in what he had endured for Christ.

He explained that these marks represented the true cost of discipleship. Paul’s suffering was not a sign of failure, but of fellowship with Christ. Every hardship he faced testified to his obedience and reflected the reality that following Jesus required denying oneself and embracing discomfort. The speaker stressed that the Christian life was never meant to be easy or centred on personal comfort.

Pastor also challenged the way modern Christianity often measured success. He pointed out that many focused on ease, numbers, or outward prosperity, but true faithfulness was revealed in perseverance, especially when it became uncomfortable. Bearing the marks of Christ today might not always involve physical persecution, but it still required costly decisions—choosing integrity over compromise, standing for truth despite opposition, and remaining faithful even when misunderstood.

He illustrated this through the lives of Joseph and Daniel, who both chose obedience to God in difficult situations. Their decisions led to suffering and isolation, yet their faithfulness became a testimony of God’s presence and approval. The speaker emphasised that doing the right thing did not always lead to immediate reward, but it always reflected true allegiance to God.

He further explained that bearing Christ’s marks could also be seen in everyday choices—living with purity, refusing to conform for acceptance, loving others sacrificially, and forgiving even when it was painful. He stressed that standing for truth required both courage and gentleness, especially in a world that increasingly resisted it.

Ultimately, Pastor pointed to Jesus Christ as the ultimate example. He explained that the cross was the greatest mark of love, obedience, and sacrifice. Jesus bore the marks first, not out of weakness, but out of deep love for humanity. Believers were therefore called not only to follow His character, but also to embrace the cost of following Him.

In closing, Pastor Oliver challenged the congregants to examine their own lives. He asked what evidence existed that they truly belonged to Christ, and what “marks” could be seen through their decisions, sacrifices, and faithfulness. He emphasised that true discipleship would always leave visible evidence.
