On Monday 29 April 2024 the President (Priyesh Mehta) and Vice-President (Saagar Mehta) of Shree Jain Sangh East London & Essex were invited alongside other representatives of the UK Jain community to celebrate the first ever Mahavir Janma Kalyanak celebration at 10 Downing Street ๐Ÿช”๐Ÿ›•

The event was hosted by The Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Secretary of State in the Cabinet Office, who shared a positive outlook on the Jain religion, Jain people and recognised our contributions to the country ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ ๐Ÿซฑ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซฒ๐Ÿฝ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

Jayeshbhai Shah recited some Jain prayers including the auspicious Navkar Mantra, which echoed the halls of Downing Street ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Truly on 29 April 2024 history was made!

Our Jain Dharma was officially put on the map in the UK political system ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“. It was an awe inspiring event, and the mere fact that our Navkar Mantra melodically swelled 10 Downing Street, was an incredibly surreal moment ๐ŸŽต

It is an absolute honour for our Sangh and the wider Jain community to be recognised by the UK government in this manner, and shows the progress that has been made in recent years in bringing greater awareness of the Jain dharma and what it represents.

As always, these milestones are only achievable when we all work together and so we thank all of you, our members, for your support of our Sangh over the years that has brought us to this stage ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Today marks a very auspicious day in the Jain calendar. Diwali, is the day on which Shree Mahavir Bhagwan attained nirvan, and became an enlightened and liberated soul ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Mahavir Bhagwan attained nirvan in Pavapuri, modern day Bihar, by meditating in one spot in the position of padma-ashana. The place in Pavapuri where he attained nirvan contains the Jal Mandir, believed to contain footprints of Mahavir Swami.

Diwali, was originally referred to as Dipalikaya, meaning light leaving the body, symbolising the infinite knowledge of Mahavir Bhagwan as the light leaving his body. To commemorate this diyas ๐Ÿช” are lit to illuminate his enlightenment and the festival is celebrated in a peaceful and bliss manner ๐Ÿณ!

From all of us at Shree Jain Sangh East London & Essex we wish you a Shubh Diwali and Nutan Varsh Abhinandan! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
